I never thought of insect as animals. I thought animals were mammals, no? Lady bugs are so cute. Flies, not so much at all.

Animals are divided into Phyla - such as Chordata (vertebrates), Arthropoda (Insects, spiders etc), Mollusca (snails etc) and so on, which are then each further divided into Classes.

The Classes you are probably familar with - mammal, birds, reptiles, amphibians - are just one group of all animal life, which by population and number of species is overwhelmingly smaller than the other Phyla.

The insect class is Hexapoda (for 6 legs) which further breaks down into Order, Family, Genus and Species, and includes butterflies, moths, the cute ladybugs and yes those pesky ants.

Wow how cool is that. I was secretly hoping something like this was true, EW.

Thanks for the lesson. Do you already know this stuff off the top of your head or are you reading it/copying it now?

Are mammals Chordata?

I love Mollusca, you get those amazing Golden Mean originating designs and they are quite mind blowing.

One of my degrees is Human Biol, for which a good grounding in overall Biology helped.

The above is pretty basic and easy to remember after you do some reading.

A good way to remember classification breakdown is a mnenomic:

Kings Play Chess On Fine Glass Stools  =  KPCOFGS  =  Kingdom into Phyla into Class into Order into Family into Genus and Species.

Yes, Chordata =  common name Vertebrates

Here is my submission to ths thread. I think its much harder to come up with the clues.
Best of luck![:D]

To get the ball rolling, I will guess something to do with computers/memory?

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 7:51:29 AM)

Not computer or memory related, but I like how you roll.[:)]

I was channelling Level, and sort of enjoying the thought of his computer wrangling.

In a convivial way, of course. [8D]

Ok, 2 are types of fossils.

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 8:14:34 AM)

Why yes...yes they are.
However compression is also a type of engine, and trace can and is used to describe "evidence", and also a way to reproduce something.
Sooooo...can you be certain you are on the right track?

I'm feeling ok about my track at this early stage.

I forgive any errant thinking on my part pre-coffee.

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 10:35:45 AM)

Pardon my delay in acknowledging this post. I had sunshine to contend with!
How's that coffee affecting you now? vrooom vrooom....[:D]

heartcream -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 11:21:53 AM)

I need coffee and think I will go buy it out today since I have the day off. Hmmm first I will get some groceries and then pick up the coffee[:D]

Does it have to do with measuring the effect of cold and compression on Lymph flow at the ankle, Poise?

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 12:22:36 PM)

No lymph flow or anything of that nature, although an ankle massage sounds fabulous right about now.[8D]

heartcream -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 1:06:24 PM)

(William)Harley Davidson engines?

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 1:09:47 PM)

No ma'am. What kind of coffee did you get?[:D]

heartcream -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 1:29:53 PM)

Tim Horton's to go with some little tiny donuts to match! I am having a blueberry smoothie first though, get some nutrition in the ol girl.

Is it some sort of machine to measure trace elements of something, perhaps using lots of compression invented by a man named William?

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/8/2010 1:53:27 PM)

I'm rolling with railroad because of the "hidden" clues.

What's the name of that kid's TV show?  Oh, nuts..... it's Thomas the Tank Engine.  Was hoping for "Billiy" = William.

Let's see, William Murdock built first prototype steam engine.
Compression of steam makes the engine trace out a path. (Not really, but it follows the trace of the rails.)
10,000 - - - I got nuthing'
