LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (10/28/2010 9:01:05 PM)

HINT: Of the 26 Cantons of Switzerland, these four form a unique quartet because of their position.  That is, there are no other Cantons which could be added to the list.

tropicalhoney -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (10/29/2010 3:52:12 AM)

They are the only ones which border Italy?

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (10/29/2010 8:20:17 AM)

Close, but one doesn't border Italy at all (and one has a partial border with Italy.)

ETA:  Well, actually, after thinking about it, the other THREE have a partial border with Italy.  And the difference between the two statements should give it away. LOL!

tropicalhoney -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (10/29/2010 8:43:52 AM)

Well, I thought maybe southern cantons, but Geneve is south of Vaud...so I am confused.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (10/29/2010 9:24:50 AM)

YIKES!  You are correct -  These 4 (AND the teeny, tiny canton of Geneva) form the southern border of Switerland.
See - all the more reason to NOT be rushed when writing a quartet.

Lance will now slink off the stage, blushing as he goes......

And from the stage manager, we hear: "Psst, your line, honey."

tropicalhoney -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (11/6/2010 6:15:43 AM)

Okay, I'm going to be away for a bit so I will give a really easy clue.  Think plants!

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (11/6/2010 10:48:29 PM)

And now, a message from our current "poser" to me.....

tropicalhoney on 11/6/10 at 1:17 PM:

I posted that you had CM'd me the correct answer, so now it is your turn.

I am off until around Thanksgiving when I shall return with a splendid tan and many extra pounds.

Well, she must've been more concerned about her vacation (in the Virgin Islands, if you please) 'cause she didn't - post, that is.

The winning answer is world's longest living trees.  These are the names given to the 4 actual specimens, not the type or species or whatever.

Pre-Google Guesses:

-- Biblical kings
-- Champagne measures

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (11/7/2010 7:50:30 PM)

A Biblical King named Sovereign?  Hmmm... a goggling I shall go....maybe, just maybe that's where we get the word.... NOPE!
sovereign - Wiktionary
Etymology. From Old French soverain, based on Latin super. Ending influenced by reign.
-------------------
Measures of Champagne?  You mean like quarts and gallons?  I think not.... (but damn close.)  You must think more clearly.  You must contain your wild thoughts.

dcnovice -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (11/9/2010 5:28:26 PM)

Wine/champagne bottles?

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have in Common? (11/10/2010 6:21:42 AM)

Yep.  Sizes of wine bottles, although now used only for Champagne.  Very rarely made.

Your turn, dc.
