Aylee, I believe you're right about the Cockney rhyming slang.

Apple and pears = stairs
Dog and Bone = phone
Plates of Meat = street
Butcher's Hook = look

Your turn to post, Aylee.

All books in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett?

and yes, they were all born in Plymouth Mass DC

Since I'm sure I'm right I'll post a new quartet.

May & Flower
Flyer & Fryer
Marshmallow & Yam
Stars & Stripes

edited for spelling.

They are all books by Terry Pratchett, although I am not sure if you could consider Strata part of the Discworld series.  Although part of it takes place on a type of Discworld, kind of.

Your list would be a list of things that happen togeather.

Flowers in May
Stars and stripes on a flag
A flyer (turkey) in a fryer
Yams and marshmallows in candied yams

ah...no, they're names of specific things though. I knew they were Pratchett books since the majority were Disc I slagged off and assumed it was a Discworld as well.

May & Flower ~ a boat
Flyer & Fryer ~ types of chickens
Marshmallow & Yam
Stars & Stripes ~ a flag

The marshmallow and yam is throwing me, unless it is a dish

Thanks to infoplease, I'm pretty sure it's the turkeys.

On Tuesday, November 20, 2007, President Bush gave two turkeys named May and Flower a last-minute reprieve. The two hail from Dubois, Indiana, and were raised under the direction of National Turkey Federation Chairman Ted Seger. For the fifth time, the American public was allowed to vote for the turkeys' names on the White House web site. About 28,000 votes were cast online in 2007. 2006's turkeys were named Flyer and Fryer; 2005's were Marshmallow and Yam; 2004's were Biscuit and Gravy; and 2003's were Stars and Stripes.

Turkeys pardoned by the President?

They were indeed all the names of the turkeys pardoned over the last 5 years.

I knew I should have thrown in Jack (the turkey pardoned by Lincoln).

Opening of Parliament in New Zealand (1954)
Opening of Parliament in Australia (1954)
Opening of Parliament in Ceylon (1954)
Opening of Parliament in Canada (1957)

What sartorial wonder do these events have in common?

True, but there's a particular piece of clothing they all have in common.

Basically. They were four of the six times she wore the dress after the coronation, according to the Monarchy website.

Since the Coronation, The Queen has worn the Coronation dress six times:
Reception at Buckingham Palace
Reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse
Opening of Parliament in New Zealand (1954)
Opening of Parliament in Australia (1954)
Opening of Parliament in Ceylon (1954)
Opening of Parliament in Canada (1957)
