It still seems like we are glorfying it. Even death in video games sorta glorifys killing. In my favorite game savage - one of the reasons i love it, is because when i kill another player i literally get to see blood squirt from their stomach. If you stand over the dead body and swing, you gush blood every where. Not that one thing leads to another, as we are all responsible for our actions. But in a way..

That's one of the reasons why i never play them. I don't want to be desensitized to the pain of of otherliving things.

However, if someone is trying to take my life or my family's, you bet your ass I'm going to be just as viscious as anyone else would be...if they cared.

RiotGirl -> RE: America's Most Wanted show tonight (11/25/2006 10:05:02 PM)

nah..... (again) doesnt do that.  I "think" i might of run over something last night.  I heard a thump/bump and i about spazzed.  When i got to CVS, i got out and CAREFULLY checked the side of the car for blood.  Tires too.  No blood, so i must not of run over something! (noooo body ruin this for me..)  I see dead animals on the road and i shiver.  If i wasnt so damn hormonal, i'd prolly pull over and make sure each was completely dead and not "dying".  Unfortunetly these days, i'd prolly break down and cry sitting on the side of the road about the poor wasted and traumatized life.  Poor little creatures = (

yeah i dun think you hit the nail on the head.  I think it all really depends on who you are.

The fact that we "play" at such a real tradegy, is if you think about it.............. totally fucked up.  We imitate a real life tradgey.  does anyone ever think about that?

I think about that a lot actually, and it's a factor in my reluctance to own, much less act on, my submissive desires. (Of course, I need to be honest and recognize that I could also be using such concerns to cloak fear.)

I think that BDSM is an extremely healthy and sane way for a person to deal with masochistic, sadistic, dominant or submissive feelings.  To seek pleasure of any kind is ultimately a life-affirming urge, and turning this kind of horror into harmless pleasure is a bit of wizardry to be admired, not condemned.

Nicely put, Morrigel! That's what I've been trying to convince myself of.

All games simulate real life--and often the worst parts of real life.  Being "kidnapped" and "raped" in a game is very much like "dying" in a video game.  It has nothing to do with affirming, causing or glorifying the real thing.  No one who dies in a video game ends up thinking "That was nothing!  I'll go jump off a bridge."

That's true. Then again, a photographer who'd returned from Iraq told a friend of mine that he was struck, and a bit shaken, by how often the young soldiers compared combat to a video game! It made him wonder if they really grasped just what they were doing.

Its because they have been conditioned/brainwashed.

You have a point that most games in life simulate sometimes the worst parts in life.  Video games are a good point.  Yet, while i like video games - i wouldnt say they are "right".  When i look for the "right and wrong" of this I look for the worst possible thing to simulate and i think of the holocaust.  What if we were to simulate that?  Is that okay in your mind?

We already have simulated that, hon, many many times, in games, film, porn--and in the private sex games of thousands of people.  Some of the people who played those games were people who could have been victims of the Holocaust themselves--a few were even real Holocaust survivors.

The thing about making the horror into a game is...they were in control.  The game started when they wanted it to start, ended when they needed it to end, ran through scenarios which were of their choosing, and in the end they weren't dead, or hurt in any way they didn't want to be hurt.

The real Holocaust was not this way.  The play Holocaust, sick and terrible as it might appear to outsiders, was actually a positive exercise for those involved.  And many BDSM scenes which re-enact other painful experiences--sexual molestation as a child, slavery, interrogation, police brutality, rape, kidnapping, a sadistic medical experiment, etc.--are also positive exercises for those involved.  Because, as during the filming of a horror movie, the terrible power of death or evil can be invoked--and then casually dismissed at the end of the game, when everyone gets up, washes the blood off, and goes off to have a nice cast party dinner.

Or in the case of BDSM, when everyone is released from their bonds, wrapped in a nice blankie with a nice drink and gets cuddled and petted for aftercare.  [:)]

Sorry, I realize it is strange, but I think there are times when demons are definitely raised by art, or a sexual game--and when those demons are raised, the art or the sexual game gives us a chance to control them, write our own script and re-enact it.  Certainly this was the psychological purpose that was served by "I Spit on Your Grave", the first serious "rape-revenge" movie.  The director of that film was present the night that a woman who had been savagely raped stumbled out of Central Park bleeding--he was so traumatized by the thought of what she had gone through that he had to make a movie where the rape happened, but then the victim got the chance to torture and murder all her attackers, one by one.

He couldn't help the real woman, or prevent her from being harmed.  He just needed to heal himself.  I think many of the scariest BDSM games or movies serve a similar purpose.  Turning something into a sexual fantasy and acting it out is no different from turning it into a script and acting it out.  It's a damn sight healthier than really hurting someone--or really getting yourself hurt.

It's a sign that they are dissociating from the experience to a degree.  Soldiers from previous wars compared combat to movies, and before the advent of film they compared it to dreams.

LadyEllen -> RE: America's Most Wanted show tonight (11/26/2006 10:54:21 AM)

We have thousands of sex slaves in the UK - young women trafficked in from eastern Europe on the promise of a good job in the west.

When they arrive here, they are beaten and gang raped - to crush their spirit and any remaining resistance. Then they are sold off to the very lowest of low lives for prostitution.

The relationship of this kind of filthy scumbag abuse to bdsm, is to me of a similar nature to that of an axe murder to medical surgery. Axe murderers and surgeons both use blades to cut flesh, but only one does so with consent and for the positive benefit of both parties.

I am personally against the death sentence, but by God I would gladly dismember the scumbag traffickers and those who buy from them, with a rusty spoon, and laugh as they drowned in their own blood.

LadyEllen, that is my point, if this exists in Great Britain or the U.S. we can do something about it.
But having a Hollywood Celebrity with a "cause" come on t.v. and tell me I should "do something" about something that's happening in a foreign country (Cambodia) is is too much.
Shouldn't Daryl Hannah be working with Cambodian police on this matter?
I mean what are the Chicago Police  say going to do about something going on in Cambodia?
And also I read an article a few years ago about how the Russian Mafia uses this for an "Asylum" scam.
They get 20 or 30 women into the U.S. say and into an apartment or house and coach them to say all the right things to the authorities when they are "caught."
They teach them how to play the "victim."
They may even slap them around a bit to show visable marks of "abuse."
Of course when an "anonymous" call comes in the the Police Dept, the "pimps" are *never* caught and the U.S. Taxpayer gets stuck paying the bills for foreign national "sex trade *victims*" who *ALWAYS* want to claim "asylum."
I mean don't you think these poor women would want to be reunited with their families in Eastern Europe?
They NEVER do it seems! Odd huh?
The Russian Mafia's going rate for this "service" is $25,000.per "Asylum" seeker.
Nice gig, eh?
They do that once a month and make half a mil.
And then the "Immigration" Attorneys step in *on our dime* and make "claims" for these "victims" under the "T" Visa" program.
"T" meaning "Trafficing".
It's all a scam, you can't tell me that these "Immigration" Attorneys don't know what the hell is going on.
They make a lot of money off this stuff!

LadyEllen -> RE: America's Most Wanted show tonight (11/26/2006 1:18:36 PM)

Hi Popeye

I dont know about the US, but the police here are dealing with it as best they can. Many of the young women involved want to return home - they are often from EU states like Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and so on and could remain here legally, but prefer to go where they feel safer, with their parents. Some want to remain here, but our wonderful Home Office deports them as illegals, regardless of the fact that they have been so traumatised by their experience that this is the last thing they need - to be treated as criminals, and regardless of the fact that when they get home there will be none of the support that they need and could receive here.

I know your thoughts on illegals, but in my view, if our government has failed to detect these young women being smuggled into the country, and then failed to protect them from their abusers (including their British "clients"), then we do owe them something better than a detention centre and forced repatriation. They probably shouldnt have the right to remain, but they certainly should have the right to better treatment as victims in this situation.

popeye1250 -> RE: America's Most Wanted show tonight (11/26/2006 1:27:11 PM)

LadyEllen, agreed but "you" don't need to be taking "responsibility" for them.
Their home countries should be the ones responsible for this.
Indeed your Home Office should be making Formal Complaints against those countries for their inaction on those matters.

Many modern troops do kill via video games, that is the technology. Distance killing is pretty much the norm. Very few troops get out of their armoured cars, tanks, etc and seek out and kill the enemy, they blast them froma distance, one of the reasons civilian deaths are so high in shoot outs and one of the reasons why Iraqis and Afghanistanis are turning against western troops who purport to be occupying their country to help them. Look at Faluhja, it was blown back to the stoneage, some help, some liberation.
