Just FYI authors tend to get a limited number of free copies of our own books and have to pay something after that. I've ran into a lot of folks who think I have this magic bad that produces them -- that would be cool!

Personally, I wouldn't expect the book to be free... just signed! [;)] I'd be quite happy to pay for the book, your time, & shipping charges. [:)] I'm just unsure of how such a transaction would be paid... paypal?

Either way, be sure to let us know! (I'm a bibliophile)

*shudders at the thought of PayPal*

If I did that I'd just want cash -- checks can bounce and I'm not a business so using something like PayPal would be too costly plus I don't like some of the decisions they've made to support some businesses or not, particular SM events, in the past.

Honestly the best way to find out my writing is to join my fansite on Yahoogroups where I let folks see work in progress and make announcements if I'm going to events.

You can find a link to that group and samples of my published works here: http://www.kiva.net/~teckhart/

Thank you everyone for your well-wishes. If you read any of my work, please send me an email. I love hearing from folks who've read my stuff or as I like to say "I'm not Harlan Ellison, I appreciate my readers".

You go girl. That took some doing. Did you do the layout and design or the manuscript only.

subfever -> RE: Good News to Share (11/30/2006 6:50:37 PM)

That's really great! Getting kink-based erotica published is no easy task.

Congrats to you, I hope you sell a million copies!

Congratulations!

I've grown so accustomed to our new faith-based society that anytime I see the phrase "good news" I assume it must have something to do with the gospels.

My first erotica novel is going to be published in less than 9 months. I'm excited. This seems like a logical step from my short story collections.

There's a long story to this.

I thought my last publisher was going to publish this novel but I had only a verbal agreement with one of the two people in charge. (Note to other writers: Verbal agreements, never count on them)

I've been happy at all with how poorly my fourth collection of erotica was being marketed and I was uncertain how I felt about them taking on my first novel.

Then the second partner of the company decided that they just couldn't do any more books -- I was, needless to say, pissed.

But I started looking again and asked my fan group to give me feedback on the first chapter of the novel while I looked around. I'd sent in an article to a magazine and it's editor and I started talking. I asked him if he knew of any place that was looking for het SM erotica (it is actually rather easy to get lesbian and gay SM erotica published, lots of those publishers out there) and he said "Yes, I do".

End of long story.

To answer your question, sophia37, the publisher did the layout but is asking me for things like a bio, an acknowledgement and dedication section, a picture, and even my suggestions for cover. (by the way, very rare in publishing; my first collection cover had ZERO to do with anything in the book)

Susan Wright (whom some of you may know from the NCSF or her science fiction/fantasy writing) has written the back blurb for my novel as a favor to me. I'm hoping her greater name recognization will help the book.

The publisher wants a photo for the cover so I made two suggestions: object or people. People would be fees for models and the need to find two people who look like the main characters. Objects, well there are two important books and three sacred objects our main characters are questing for -- the descriptions of the objects is less restrictive than that of the characters.

I asked that the color not be blue because I hate the color blue.

So today I have to write the dedication and the acknowledgement thing and then my side of everything will be done.

I'll be participating in a chat at the BRC about my writing later in December if anyone is on that group or wants to read along. (http://www.thebrc.net/)

Thank you everyone for your great wishes.

Thank you, timeoutgurlie.

This is my first novel but I have 4 collections of my short fiction published. This is another step toward my writing goals in fiction anyway.

Academic writing is an entirely different issue.

timeoutgurlie -> RE: Good News to Share (12/2/2006 6:14:01 AM)

You're welcome, and wow, well, what I said still stands, I'm sure this is just as exciting even though it's not your first published work, will look out for it when it's available [:D]

BBWGoddess07 -> RE: Good News to Share (12/2/2006 7:10:59 AM)

Many congratulations Tammy Jo.  [:D]  Something to be really proud of.

Congratulations Tammy!
Having been published in vanilla fiction in the 90s, I know how difficult a road it is, so you have a lot to be proud of.

Vanilla fantasy or science fiction would sell much better I bet.

However, I'd feel like was omitting some important things I think.

It could be worse--that used to be the sole way authors were paid.

Congratulations!

Monica

DiannaVesta -> RE: Good News to Share (12/3/2006 10:31:40 AM)

That is wonderful news and I can't wait until its published. Congrats!

sophia37 -> RE: Good News to Share (12/5/2006 11:21:40 AM)

Im sure you know this by now since you've worked with the industry for a while, but you cant always leave it to them to do all the marketing. Since you have more than one finished product, I dont see why you cant set up your own booth at book show/festivals.

The price of the shows really runs the gamut. Or split the booth with other authors.  Any publishing house you worked with will be glad to set you up with books for sale.  You know your product better tha anyone else. Keep at it if you can, its one tough business. But if its what you believe in, then keep going! Best wishes xoxox Sophie

It is true that an author must promote herself. However it is the job of the publisher to make a book available to books stores via distruptors or direct sell -- they print the book and have the warehouses with them, I don't have that magic backpack with the never ending supply of books.

I'm always happy to go places, do readings, and talk about my book, I'm always thrilled to sign them, but since publisher make the bulk of any money off of any book, they should really be doing the majority of the work to get it out to the public.

I tell folks all I want about my book but at the end of the day if they can't order it or buy it somewhere, it does no good.
