I'll try and lay out what you can glean from all those threads LA just posted.

The real Old Guard were gay US military vets who invented a very formal and fairly extreme form of S&M culture between the late 40's and the early 80's. There are virtually none of these Tops or bottoms left as AIDS took a very heavy toll on the community and old age is claiming any that made it past HIV.

The other Old Guard you will likely hear about is some hetero Dom claiming to be "Old Guard Trained" or some similiar bs. I'm willing to lay down money that no one who has ever claimed this was telling the truth.

I was looking into this very subject just yesterday.

Found some good essays at Albany Power Exchange (Clicky)

Each essay has a differnet perspective, including ones written by people identified as Old Guard by their peers and successors.

There's also good ol' Wikipedia, which focusses more on "Just the facts, ma'am"

All in all, sounds like a lot of hard work to me to be honest. Bit too formalised and militaristic for my liking...

Remember Police Accademy? What was the name of that club? I think it was called the Blue Clam or something along those guide lines. Remember the Leather Guy in the Village People singing group? Now you know Old Guard or atleast as much as most people want to learn about it.

The Blue Oyster.

LOL!

Google up the following names and you'll get some reasonable sources for a definition of Old Guard Leather
Guy Baldwin, Viola Johnson, Mark Thomson, Joseph Bean, Drummer Magazine, Dungeon Master Magazine, The Leather Journal,
A few books that are in print and give a good idea of it are: Ties that Bind, To Love To Serve To Obey diary of an Old Guard slave,
Leather Folk  and Leather Sex Q&A.

Leather Culture is alive and well but struggling a bit with keeping an identity seperate from the more hetero BDSM culture, without severing the ties that work for both benifit.

Surely you're not suggesting that all groups or individuals of the era shared the same rituals and protocols (no more so than people or groups of today, even with our vastly improved modes of communication).

So who's rituals and protocols are they?

Shylahgirl -> RE: Old Guard leather culture (11/29/2006 8:43:36 AM)

The old guard is thought of by a lot of people to be the high point of the gay, male, BDSM clutter.

Usually old guard traditions involve a very strict military style of rules and higher archly based group.

In the old guard women were not allowed, since it was a gay male thing, tops wore black leather, bottoms wore brown, if a submissive was owned a top was not allowed to talk to them, bottoms could never look a top in the eye, switches we frowned apon greatly, and there’s a lot more rules… those are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

Most people who say they are old guard these days aren’t… old guard was mainly from the 1930’s two the late 50’s early 60’s… most of the real old guard players are dead.

But, yea… that’s what I know.

If you search for old guard on google you should be able to find more. And it’s important to remember that rule of old guard changed from city to city… there was no big counsel saying this is what everyone who is old guard will do all over the country.
 Shylah
