HAPPY VALENTINES DAY EVERY BODY! (kiss a frog today!)

quote:

THE HISTORY OF VALENTINE'S DAY
Valentines Day started during the rule of Emperor Claudius II. Rome had been involved in many bloody and unpopular wars. Claudius the Cruel, as he was known, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join the military. He believed the reason was because Roman men didn't want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius canceled all marriages and engagements in Rome.

There was a Christian priest named Valentine who defended love in the empire. Valentine began to secretly marry couples despite the Emperor's orders. When Emperor Claudius was informed of these ceremonies, Valentine was sent to prison where he remained until his death on February 14 in the year 270.

It wasn't until hundreds of years later that Valentine's Day began to develop as we know it. At the time of Valentine's death, Christianity was beginning to take control of Europe. The Church sought to do away with pagan holidays. Valentine's Day came to replace a mid-February fertility festival called Lupercalia. In honor of his sacrifice for love, Valentine was made a saint and Lupercalia renamed in his honor.

Today, the tradition of honoring St. Valentine continues. The themes of love and fertility taken from the ancient meanings of the holiday have endured and evolved into today's contemporary theme.

Lupercalia was a very festive Roman holiday (Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar" opens during Lupercalia)

The priests would sacrifice a dog and a couple goats - both animals regarded for their sexual fervor. The priests would then cut strips of goat hide which could be used as whips, which were called 'februa'. After a dinner and much wine, the priests would run through the streets of run lashing any woman they could catch. And reportedly quite a few women came out for the lashings. Being whipped was believed to increase fertility.

BTW, februa is also the basis for the name of this month - February. No, it doesn't mean the "Month of the Whip" - although it does sound appealing. It actually means the Month of Fever (since fever is regarded as purifying... and there is also a sexual connotation as well) The whips used in Lupercalia were named after the word for fever. A bit less interesting, but true nonetheless.

So happy Lupercalia everyone!

A reason for that was that when Christianity was taking hold the Christians wanted to reinforce their holidays during times that the pagans already knew to be festive times. They were pushing out the old and bringing in the new in the hopes that the pagans would embrace the Christian holidays easier - and thereby embrace Christianity along with them.

It's nice to know that the truth remains through out. I have also heard that Saint Valentine was put to death in a public square as a deterant for any other rightous who may take up where he left off, and his heart was left out for display as a reminder of it. ...What ever the end result....Yeah You GO !!!!!

Blessings To All.......
