Dear damia, Ladies and Gentlemen;

I don't get my knickers in a knot much anymore over Domme vs. Dominatrix but, I rather be labeled as a Dominatrix over a Domme. In the use of Domme, its too much like Mommie--and I'm no Mommie.

I agree, that Dom and Domme are lazy wordings for Dominant and Dominatrix. Unfortunately, prostitutes with whips and Professional services Dominatrix have be lumped; as to which forces respectful womem into using terms that just aren't respectable and text correct.
It is the same with the use of Madame or Ma`dame; which is more likely to be associated with a woman running a bawdy house or prostitution house, rather than a lady or 'Dame' (titled Dame not Humphry Bogart's use of Dame). Yet, in England, the Queen's mail is started as "Dear Madame." -- So, I do believe it depends on where in the world and how language is used, that manipulates female dominants into using terms that seperate us from the whip whacking women in prostitution and those who provide services as a professional dominatrix. Often times those of us who identify as lifestyle dominatrix, are often defined as 'amature.' Which ruffles my feathers--as most of us here are not amatures by any means.

this person ever post anything which doesn't disparage people?

i had actually thought that the creation of the term "Domme" was a reaction to the over-use of "Dominatrix" by the media. Somehow, "Dominatrix" brings to mind a caricature, whereas a "Domme" or a "Domina" is something that a real person might call herself.

What i wonder, is whether it is to be pronounced the same way as "Dom", or as "Dom-ay". i had always assumed the former, and was rather shocked to find the latter to be much more prevalent in our local munch group.

This is correct. I consider Dominatrix to be a professional. I hate the word Domme. I prefer Domina, Goddes and Queen.

Lady Hugs, are you saying Dom and Domme are the exact same thing?: Female Dominants? I always thought a Dom was the MALE version of a dominant, whereas a Domme was female. Or does the term MASTER come into play for the male?

So many terms, so little time.

Domme is a single syllable word; the only way to achieve the pronunciation “Dom-may” would be to spell it Dommé. We need more Latin in education.

It is the word that the general public will immediately relate to regarding a FemDom. Doesn't mean they are right, or have all the info, but that is what happens.
I also don't like Domme. It is just the evolved internet way of quickly indicating a Female Dominant.
But Dominatrix does not specifically mean a professional Female Dominant. And it is a correct word. It has just been associated for so long with a particular stereotype, that I am not comfortable with it.
I use Domina.

Dear ineedotk, Ladies and Gentlemen;

In my mind's eyes I see 'dominant' is a state of being rather than a title, especially in my salad days in the lifestyle when it was a M/s title of what was done. It seemingly became popular to call males that didn't wish to identify as a Master to be called "Dominant" or "Dom" for short. And, those who did not wish to be called Mistress to be called Female Dominant / Dominant Female and that got to cumbersome for individuals and suddenly women who identified as dominant--were called Domme.

Although Domme is rather close to Mommie, which I am not--I prefer to be identified as a Female Dominant, Dominant Female and or the Latin word loosely, as I understand it, translated as woman over men; Dominatrix.

In addition, there are some women who identify as Master, as Master can be a neutral title and applied to the fine arts of skill and or knowledge and or a title to an office/position.

I prefer Domme, if I need to pick something. Owner works just as well, since that is also what I am. And to Angel, I am Mommy. And that, I love.

Dominatrix to Me is a pro and a Domme is not. However like alot of the poster I don't really like either so I usually just say that I am a Dominant Female. I guess I could come up with a label that fits Me....Domfemsadist or FemDomassbeater or SadistFemDom..I could do this all day....
