Rice because its grown in a paddy with water the others are grown in fields?

Lordandmaster -> RE: odd one out? (12/5/2006 12:18:12 AM)

Well they all need water...  And rice doesn't have to be grown in paddies.

Anyway, not what I had in mind.

SDFemDom4cuck -> RE: odd one out? (12/5/2006 12:32:08 AM)

Dammit...

OK here goes...

maize

because it is the only one that isnt a grass its a cane or stalk grown. Its also the only one of the 4 that isn't milled to remove and outer hull. The other 3 were originated in Asia while maize is Mesoameric in its orgination.

Lordandmaster -> RE: odd one out? (12/5/2006 8:55:11 AM)

You've got the right idea, but the wrong crop.  Maize IS a grass.

The one that isn't...is buckwheat.

Edited to add: I probably should have said quinoa instead of buckwheat, because quinoa isn't a true grass either, and that would eliminate the "maize is the only New World crop" solution.  There's some dispute as to whether maize was known in the Old World, actually.

MrrPete -> RE: odd one out? (12/5/2006 8:58:49 AM)

Buckwheat - it is not a grass

Cuyahoga
Lakeland
Edison
Licking

(Hint: they're all places in Ohio.)

Three guesses:

Lakeland appears to be the only name shared by two different places, a town in Lucas County and another in Noble County.

Edison seems to be the only place named for a person.

Cuyahoga sounds like the only Indian name.

With my luck, that means the answer is probably Licking!

Lordandmaster -> RE: odd one out? (12/5/2006 9:55:55 PM)

Well, my answer WAS Licking (know why?), but any of yours seems OK.
