I may be traveling to Sturgis to do research for my Independent Study Thesis this summer. Has anyone here ever been there? Is anyone going to be there and possibly be willing to hang around with a nerdy college student for a few hours and maybe fill out a survey? I don't know anyone out there and I hate the idea of going alone. Any hints or tips would be nice too.

We got to spend a day at Sturgis last year on our vacation. It was great. A big biker convention sort of.
Love to be able to go again this year. But, we already have about 4 week's of vacation mapped out. That area of the country is going to be a long weekend trip.

hehe, I never though about that (also a Harry Potter freak, although one that is currently pre-occupied with her thesis)

Sturgis? Been there, done that and I'm going back, hopefully this year.

Hints... watch out for bikes... Seriously, spend some time there, more then a few hours, and you'll meet people from all over the place and most of them really enjoy talking about their experiences. And make sure and take a camera, there is nothing a biker loves more then getting his picture taken on their ride in downtown Sturgis. Your best bet would be to park your car and plan on doing a lot of walking. You have to pay to get into the campgrounds, even for a couple of hours, but if you take the trip up to Rushmore you'll find even more bikers, there and at Crazy Horse. And here's a biggie, if you see a long line of bikes going down the road... don't try to pass them. I don't think it's because they think they're better then you, but it's scary when you're on a bike and a cage comes flying around you.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, I have pics too if you need some.

Well, I am not going totally for fun I am going to get data for my thesis (although I'm sure that I will have fun too). The thing is that I am only getting funding for me to go, which means that I am going alone, which is rather intimidating.

siamsa,

Going alone is ok, it isn't like you're going to be in danger the whole time you are there hon, really, it isn't as bad as some have made it out to be. How are you getting out there? I'm sure there is a local ABATE or HOG group in your area, maybe someone from there is going too. Would this convo be easier in email or IM?

It's not my safety that I am worried about, it's just that being an introvert and going alone is something that I don't really look forward to.

So are you driving out to Sturgis? Flying? Not like there is a major airport nearby... can you give me a hint?
