A friend stopped over to show me her new purse. Nice bag....over $600 !!! Ok...am I insane? I just can't imagine parting with 600 of my dollars for a purse. I do have a couple of nicer purses that were given to me as gifts...one a Brighton, the other a Dooney&Bourke....but I would dare to say that neither of them came close to that price tag, nor would I spend that kind of money on one for myself. I do love them and they are very nice quality bags but gosh....I'm fairly certain that I could find similar style and quality for alot less money if the name wasn't imprinted on them. Most of my other bags are the 50 bucks or less variety and I like them equally well.

How important is the designer name in your purchase decisions? If money was not an issue, would you still balk at those kind of prices? Is buying an item such as these a "status" thing, a "style" thing or more of a way to pamper yourself?

Goodness, when I buy a handbag it's usually from the market and costs no more than £10 ($20ish). I figure, as long as it gets the job done (holds all my crap), then I don't need to spend a small fortune on it.

There was a feature on the BBC's The Culture Show on Sunday about the boom in designer handbags and if your friend has a $600 one she is rather frugal. Apparently some women pay up to $6,000 for a handbag. The designer companies are so cynical they make limited editions to create waiting lists to increase the cache of their products. Of course the women that buy these bags see them as status. However, bags are now popular because women can flaunt a designer name no matter what their size is, unlike clothes where they would have to be a particular size. Designers don't want their clothes seen on a mountain of a clothes horse.

Oh the cost of making a $2,000 bag could be as little as $50.

I cannot fathom spending more then $100 bucks on a purse. In fact the one that I do have I just bought at JC Penney for $75 bucks. To me spending hundreds/thousands on some trinket like a purse is just crazy. I'm not into designer labels so they are a waste on me. I buy what I like and what serves me well.

$6,000 ??? Maybe I am a bit too frugal but to me $6,000 would be much better spent on mortgage or a car. I have never met anyone that I wanted to impress that much....lol.

If money was not an issue, there are some designer things I would buy.  Not for the NAME though- just because I happen to really like those items and think they look awesome.

As a fashionista, I follow trends and names in fashion and have associations towards them.  But they don't mean much as a personal status symbol.

But the Coach glasses with the crystal detailing and the Louis Vuitton luggage set...I'd definitely grab them up if they became available to me.  I think they look awesome and would enjoy using them.

95% of stuff you can get just as good as designer stuff at much lower costs .  The other 5% though...totally worth it.

LaTigresse -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 9:25:22 AM)

Hmmmmmmmmm, nudging my bag under the desk out of sight.

I claim the 5th. But I did get it on sale...............

because the words it and in were not interchangable in that particular sentence

MmakeMme -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 9:25:51 AM)

Anything that suits my style is ok with me (adult tomboy) but I would like to have the money to purchase infinite pairs of Kate Spade and Manolo Blahnik ... but I like less expensive things just as well, really (since money ~is~ an object).

I adore Ralph Lauren anything - clothes, bags, shoes and I lovvvvvvvve Enzo shoes. Fossil bags are pretty cool. None of that stuff is designer, but then I don't have to worry about losing it, tearing it, breaking it, or getting tired of it, and I don't have to be sick when I see the same piece of clothing or accessory on someone else.

gypsygrl -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 9:26:00 AM)

Purses???

I have one.

It cost about 15 or 20 and my mom bought it for me at a clearance sale when my old one fell apart.  It looks stupid, is a little too big for me and the small amount of stuff I carry with me, but it works ok. And, since my mom bought it for me, I keep it.

I really can't imagine a world where someone would spend 600$ on a purse.  What does one put in such an expensive bag?

He He...not sure if it's common sense or stupidity on my part...materialistic folks DO seem to have more stuff in life. I just don't think it would appeal to me though even if my name was Ivana Trump. I have one of those minds that goes " I could get this one purse....or eat really well for the next two months". Practicality always wins out.

I'm both.

I was raised in a house where getting "stuff" was pretty darn special and a big deal.  So when someone makes an effort to spend money on me, it does mean more than it "should."

But at least I'm fully aware of it.

amativedame -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 9:31:54 AM)

I don't like to spend more than $100 on any bag (and it better be one hell of a bag for that kind of money.)

I don't see the point of name brand bags myself.  I could care less who makes it, its the style and quality that matters to me.  So many of the bags out there today are "very fashionable."  I can't fathom the idea of spending more than $50 on something that's going to be out of style in a year and will never buy anything that won't at least be "in" for at least that long.

Although there is a brand where I would spend a large sum of money on if I had that kind of cash to be tossing away.  My health back bags since they are one of the only kind of bag I can really use for a significant amount of time without it bothering my back or my shoulder.  Their items are on the pricey side though, even the non leather versions.   If I had a ton of  money I would love to be able to afford a  new leather bag from them... but alas; I do not have the kind of income where I can justify blowing  $144- 232 on a handbag.

KrysFyre -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 9:35:08 AM)

Now i have never spent more than AU$10 on a handbag before, but that may be because i have only ever had one handbag...

So for me spending $600 on a handbag doesnt sound too bad...if it lasts as long as this one has (6yrs) then i really dont mind!

RiotGirl -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 10:01:26 AM)

Em.............  er....... i have a purse and its a Prada  and i SWEAR it was a gift.  Unfortunetly what i would consider a dumb gift idea.  Xmas gift from my step mother.  My father got me a 600 digi cam which i consider alot more useful.

i also have a purse that is some italian leather thingy ma bob that my mother got while she was in Rome.  Its supposedly a designer but i dont really bother myself with those things..  oh hell.. let me go find it.... it says Valentino di Paolo.  Not that i know what that means = )  But supposedly its good.... so thats good.

My family is very materialistic.  My step mother has a ring on her finger that the elicited the words "thats so shiny, is it real" from my mouth.  It was a big ol fat diamond and personally - looked fake as shit to me.  LOL  My father just smiled kindly at me.  To them it equals status.  The big fat ring, the 60,000 antique habit a year, the importing a fireplace from Paris to london, the specifically made suits my father has made in some country, the Mercedes (or whatever car he drives now) the million dollar apartment in london.....  well its status.

Its so when they get together with the other elite they can have something to sit around and bullshit about.  "oh you got your nails done where??"  "oooooh that is such a lovely fireplace... " Really its just status and presentation.  Kind of silly if you ask me, but whatever floats their boat, so be it.  If that is what is important to them.. then let em have it.  Who am i to judge?

I'm the type of person that when my brother said "what would you like for your birthday"  my response was "having you around".  i also get a kick out of the status and presentation thing and one can frequently find me going to the 7/11 with no shoes, in sweats and a baggy button down shirt.

my mother swears she isnt materialistic and just likes to have "nice things"  Eh.  She's materialistic and i know this because the size of her two walk in closets.  So i guess it comes down to nice things vs cheap things and status quo and presentation and just being excessive.  Then again, if you have the money and all your "needs" are covered....  i suppose why not?  If thats what you enjoy - then have at it.

P.S.  you cant really expect to be welcomed by the cream of the euro crop with a walmart bag can you!  How silly of us for thinking so.....

Last one i bought was £5 and that's as much as i'd go on one... they're just a pocket on a string.

But then i am the antichrist of all things labelly... if anything they exude gutter class rather than the real maccoy to me.

daddysprop247 -> RE: Ok ladies....purses$$$$$ (and other designer things) (12/4/2006 11:12:09 AM)

i've never, ever understood those who clamor and save up to buy something obscenely overpriced simply because it's what nicole richie or kidman is wearing at the moment. while i do care a great deal about quality in all things, and don't mind paying for quality if that's what's necessary, i have enough common sense to know that just because something says gucci or blahnik doesn't mean it's of a higher quality than something with a less popular, less currently chic label.

as far as purses go, i prefer nine west...they're sturdy, well-made, cute, and last me for years, which is important since i'm not the type to have more than 1 purse at any given time. i can get them as cheap as 20 bucks. that's not to say that i don't own anything "high end"...my recently purchased eyeglasses are prada...cost around 500 (with a $75 discount) once you figure in my prescription. i adore them. not because they're prada, but because they're well made and i think i look kinda cute in them. in the store trying different pairs on, the last thing i thought about was a label or name. a close runner-up to the pair i chose was a pair of no-name 100 buck total things...the only thing that made me choose the prada pair instead was the fact that the other frames were copper...the prada's were green, and since my old glasses were copper frames i wanted to do something different and kinda funky. i didn't notice they were prada (or nearly 600 bucks) til the salesperson came out with all the paperwork. that's usually the case with me....i choose things based on quality and how much i like it. period. i don't really care whether it costs 5 dollars or 500, or whether the label says "made in bangladesh" or fendi.

A ridiculous waste of money IMO.

The leather for a handbag, likely costs about USD 20-00 at most. The machinists stitching it together likely get USD 1-00 per bag they make at most. This is if its made in the US of course - if its put together in India/China or some such place, make that USD 2-00 and USD 0-10 at most.

And then a designer label is put on it. This label is apparently worth several hundred dollars? I dont think so. Designers and distributors and retailers all have to make money of course, but then they also make money when selling a USD 20-00 handbag that looks and feels and performs, just like the USD 1000-00 one. The only difference is someone's name on it.
