There's a lot of debate even among hypnotists as to what hypnotism is and if it even exists. As someone who has used it (I'm not a pro), I believe that 'something' is happening, but I admit it's difficult to define exactly what it is. It is possible to influence people in some pretty devious ways, because most people do not have simple black/white codes of morality and acceptibility. People have many hidden and contrary desires, often things they have no conscious knowledge of themselves. With skill and attention, a hypnotist can use these to produce perceptions and actions that the subject would find unacceptable consciously. Quite probably even a highly skilled hypnotist, with all the personal trust in the world, would have a hard time using trance to induce someone to do something they found repugnant on all levels- as long as the subject understood what they were being told to do. Trance does make the critical faculties take a bit of a nap, however- so the usual route to 'unnacceptable' behavior would be to use trance to distort perceptions. That's not that hard to do, even without trance- the current administration does it all the time. Citizen Cane Oh, and btw, trance work in a single session with a relative stranger has pretty sharply defined limits, but trance work repeated over many sessions with a trusted person has broader and deeper possibilities.
