Whipping therapy cures depression and suicide crises
"Russian scientists recommend the following course of the whipping therapy: 30 sessions of 60 whips on the buttocks in every procedure. A group of drug addicts volunteered to test the new method of treatment: the results can be described as good and excellent...."

”The whipping therapy becomes much more efficient when a patients receives the punishment from a person of the opposite sex. The effect is astounding: the patient starts seeing only bright colors in the surrounding world, the heartache disappears, although it will take a certain time for the buttocks to heal, of course,” Sergei Speransky told the Izvestia newspaper...."

”People might probably think of me as a masochist,” Dr. Speransky said. “But I can assure you that I am not a classic masochist at all,” he added.

I've no doubt medieval monks and nuns were into self flagellation to get high. I don't beleive there was anything religious about it. If you believe the rumours they were all having enough sex anyway but vanilla doesn't please everyone.

Proof of my aspersions on such religious pursuits. I used to live near a monastry that was destroyed in the reformation. In an archealogical dig several skeletons of babies were found within the grounds of the monastry. Since monks don't have babies, one theory is that the origin of babies were the nuns from a convent near by since there were rumours around the time of the reformation about orgies at the monastry but until the discovery of the babies, this was thought to have been protestant propaganda.

Sheesh. Everyone knows that monks wear silk and leather underwear.

Ha! I had no idea about silk/leather. <grins>  But I often wondered if nuns went commando...odd thoughts I have.

Although I would not consider the rumor of orgies at a monastery as unbelievable, I am truly surprised it was only "several" babies found.  I would have assumed that number to be a much higher one since I believe religious fanatics tend towards sick/demented (a la Spanish Inquisition torture devices).  In order to sleep at night, though, I'll pretend they were simple burials of children who died naturally.

Some fun stuff on wikipedia:

Flagellation (from Latin flagellare, to whip) was not uncommon practice amongst the more fervently religious. Various pre-Christian religions, like the cult of Isis in Egypt and the Dionysian cult of Greece, practiced their own forms of flagellation. Women were flogged during the Roman Lupercalia to ensure fertility. Jews also practiced self-whipping during large temple ceremonies.

Here I thought Dionysus was all about wine.  The older I get the more I have to acknowledge that its all been done before. lol

Honestly, though, I was still a little stoked by the idea that a flogging session might someday be covered by my insurance plan, only to find out that, historically, the church had everyone covered.  Instead of a "Two floggings and call me in the morning" prescription I could have just gone to church.

There is a book called "The Bad Popes" although I cannot remember the name of the author.

The book is hilarious as it describes the 13th and 14th century popes in Italy.

The sex escapades, the scandals, the assassinations, the wars, the marraiges, the children, etc., etc., of the leaders of the Catholic Church during this time period are not only almost excessive, but downright humourous.

Brings a new meaning to the term "Christian Love"

Especially when you juxtapose their antics against the misogynist and anti-sexuality writings of Apostle Paul.

Here's the loop hole to make an Insurance cover your flogging.

Have your prescription for physical therapy. Find a therpaist who's into BDSM. When you go to therapy, give the therapist a flogger. Your Ins gets billed as per your policy. Need I say more?
