ORIGINAL: meatcleaver I've no doubt medieval monks and nuns were into self flagellation to get high. I don't beleive there was anything religious about it. If you believe the rumours they were all having enough sex anyway but vanilla doesn't please everyone. Proof of my aspersions on such religious pursuits. I used to live near a monastry that was destroyed in the reformation. In an archealogical dig several skeletons of babies were found within the grounds of the monastry. Since monks don't have babies, one theory is that the origin of babies were the nuns from a convent near by since there were rumours around the time of the reformation about orgies at the monastry but until the discovery of the babies, this was thought to have been protestant propaganda. Sheesh. Everyone knows that monks wear silk and leather underwear. There is a book called "The Bad Popes" although I cannot remember the name of the author. The book is hilarious as it describes the 13th and 14th century popes in Italy. The sex escapades, the scandals, the assassinations, the wars, the marraiges, the children, etc., etc., of the leaders of the Catholic Church during this time period are not only almost excessive, but downright humourous. Brings a new meaning to the term "Christian Love" Especially when you juxtapose their antics against the misogynist and anti-sexuality writings of Apostle Paul. Sinergy
