childoftheshadow -> Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 6:48:41 AM)

Hello everyone,

As the people here are pretty much the only people I have to talk to, I'm hoping someone here will be able to help a little with a slight problem I have. Feel free to ignore me.

I was recently put on antidepressants (again, I've been on and off them for many years, but had been off of them for the last three years). I've been given Zoloft, and I'm having some side effects that are less than pleasant - can't sleep, very dry mouth (feel like I've been sucking on sand), sex drive down to nothing. I was wondering if anyone else has been on it, and how they have found it.

Thank you for your time, and any help you might be able to offer.

Kindest Regards,
shadow

that sounds about right, lowering sexdrive, sandmouth...........

talk to your doctor, not to your 200K+ closest friends out here.

I am not a doctor and I don't even play one on tv.  You are normal, don't believe anything else.

Talk to your doctor, hon.

I'm due to go back to my GP at the end of the week, and I will speak to him then about the side effects. I don't mind the sand mouth, or the not being able to sleep (I can get a hell of a lot done in the middle of the night), but the numb from the waist down is driving us nuts.

mnottertail -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 6:57:59 AM)

warm up the bottom some more, maybe force a little blood down that way somehow..............

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, how could that be done? Take some more time in that area getting things done.........

LOL,
Ron

hi sounds like you need a different one or dose talk to your dr
just don't stop cold turkey
also regulating sleep best thing to controll mood
no caffiene after noon
wake up same time every day
if seasonal, get a daylight lamp
psychiatrists rather than gp's are the ones to speak with
last thing you want is to have one added on top of another by someone who 's not pretty good at
tweaking meds
although most folk get a combination of an antidepressant (like zoloft)
and a benzodiazepine (like clonapin or valium)
once again your doc is the one to talk to
tell em
you're not failing if the drugs don't work
you're paying them to find you the right combination

hisannabelle -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 8:38:42 AM)

as circe said, find yourself a really good psychiatrist. i love mine, she's amazing (and goes way above and beyond her duties as a pdoc). they will be the best for tweaking meds. it may be that you need something to balance out what you're already on to help you sleep (i take a multitude of stuff for pain and sleep, some of which are antidepressants, and i've taken them for depression in the past). there's a LOT of other antidepressants out there, though, so if you know this one is causing you problems, you shouldn't feel like you need to keep taking it. there are so many options these days. and numbness, to me, would be very worrying. go see your doc! *hugs*

i had a pretty similar experience with Effexor. My doc prescribed a sleep aid (forget the name). The dry mouth i've just gotten used to, although it's irritating. i drink staggering amounts of water every day. My sex drive gradually came back about six months after i started on the drugs (for better or for worse!).

I had the numb from the waist down thing with one I was taking.  It was driving me sooooo nuts, that I talked to the Dr. about it.  I know there are a lot of them out there that won't do that to you... I am sure your Dr. can find one.

Good luck,
Kasha

I agree with Circe67 and hisannabelle. Everyone reafts differently to tpyes and dosage although there are many common ones. As long as you were not in a dramtically bad state you should openly talk to your doctor and see if a different dosage or type would be better for you. This is a trial and error area and you as the patient must be proactive in the process.

well if your concerned with the lack of a sex drive, maybe you aren't so depressed after all

(just a thought)

i've been on the darn happy pills for about 3 months - has only been in the last 6 weeks or so that my side effects have started to go away and my sex drive coming back with a vengeance!!

There are SO many different varieties out there - sometimes it's trial and error finding the best ones for you...

Good luck

Wow, you've been busy while I was away.

I've been on Zoloft before, but it was when I was in my teens and the lack of sex drive wasn't an issue. Over all I know Zoloft works well for me in treating my depression, but I'm going to ask about lowering the dose (I'm currently on twice what I was years ago).

Thank you all for your input, it's greatly appreciated.

I am on antidepressents. I have been for a few years. I have a simewhat reduced sex drive- but ill take taht over the downnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn life.

childoftheshadow -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 11:11:33 AM)

To be honest, I would rather never shag again than feel like I did. The improvement in my mental/emotional state is much more important, but it's still a little annoying.

candystripper -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 11:44:10 AM)

Dry mouth isn't so disagreeable.  You can just keep drinking water (though you'll pee more).  The lack of a sex drive is more distressing.  Don't just accept it.  It is not a choice between that or depression...there are other drugs, or drug combos.  Best of luck.

PONYSEEKER -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 12:12:15 PM)

I was put on Zoloft for seasonal depression and hated it.  I switched to paxil and did not have any side effects from it except that for the first three days I took it I felt just like I had finished having sex so my sex drive went down for a while
but I never stayed on it for any length of time.

childoftheshadow -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 1:16:11 PM)

I had a lot of problems with Paxil, along with several others I've tried. I'll go back to my GP later this week, and at the very least maybe lower my dosage.

Mood wise, I'm so much better, but I'm starting to miss sex . . . not nearly as much as my partner is though

Thanks again for all the input

Yeah, it is criminal to retire that workbench.  Something must be done.

Dear Shadow,

Well that's a issue- now he's got something to be depressed about<g>.

Seriously- I self medicate with coffee and cigarettes against depression (though as a therapist pointed out, life with out coffee is pretty depressing)... Point being, Zoloft may not be the only answer- talk about options with your GP, or perhaps a mental health type of one sort or another.

Stay Warm,
Lawrence

CalliopePurple -> RE: Not sure where to post this- Antidepressants (12/5/2006 3:39:54 PM)

Wellbutrin has a lower rate of killing the libido, but you can't take it if you have anxiety issues (like I do) because it can make them worse. And I think there's something else that rules against Wellbutrin, but my mind isn't totally functioning today. Maybe it's seizures? In any case, talk to your doctor!

I'm supposed to be on Paxil for depression and social anxiety, but St. John's wort is working well enough since I have no insurance and just moved so I don't think I can go through the county until I've been here a while.
