The number is actualy 144,000 and it is mentioned in the book of revalation, as well as numerous other places in the bible. And they do not believe that is all that will be saved, they belive the rest of the rightious will live in a paradise here on earth. Mentioned somewhere in Psalms...I think my "witness" friend said. Also unlike some religions they don't belive in hell at all (contrary to popular myth). I personly don't understand why people feel they must bash this religion... They try to live by the bible in their everyday lives, they are well spoken/behaved. I completely disagree that they are mindless or a cult, a friend of mine is one, and she has strong convictions and can back up her beliefs with many scriptures. As far as I can tell she is not brain washed. While I don't live as she thinks I should, I do respect her lifestyle. That is what it is.. her whole life refelects her beliefs. Unlike those that go to confession then turn right around and continue doing whatever they confessed as a sin the next day. I was also impressed with their efforts to help rebuild after katrina, my friend said it was all done on a strictly volunteer basis. They helped not only their brethren but others not of their religion, freely lending time and skills- trying to be "christ like". And yet people would like to bash them..as opposed to all the truly evil things in the world. lol As for the Awake, it is not published to be a "preachy" magazine, it focuses more on the current events in the world, and gives some soud advice about how to deal with it in a "christ like" way. The watchtower is the one with all the scriptures, and bible subjects. Also on a parting note..you can thank the "witnesses" for bloodless surgery, and freedom of speach. It was their fighting for their beliefs that got those things started. ;p
