On Jehova's Witnesses...... a cult, a rather insidious and dangerous one that people struggle to escape from and suffer horribly even when they do........... Ask a devotee what THEY think about the things they espouse at the door........... it's quite sad that they don't seem able to think, or are not * allowed* to.

Any religious concept, when taken to an unhealthy extreme, whether it be the indignance of Allah, the fiery wrath of Yahweh, or the downright stoner-esque apathy of Siddhartha Gautama, will lead folks to the path of mental dissolution.  I don't think that the uniformity of the "tract"-sters is anything worse than the kind of hillbilly, backwoods, crybaby antics we've seen from those darn Muslims..........or the meretricious, "Look at how different and unique I am from the herd" mentality of those dorky pagans.  People that try to stress their uniqueness in the face of overt mediocrity - now THEM THERE sons of bitches piss me off.

Christ, if I spent as much time reading books or talking to FLESH AND BLOOD people as I do fucking around on the information superhighway, I'd be a much more well-rounded person.  Goddam whoever introduced me to the fucking internet.

TreSwank, It seems to me that you have found a new religion, good for you....as for me, I am all set. I have heard "horror" stories of these witnesses coming to people's doors, luckily Ive never had them come to my door....I hate to be contacted into "buying into" something, it makes me right away not want to buy into it (whatever it is)....in any case, I have to admit I have no read "Awake!" and while it sounds somewhat ineteresting, I would rather read ridicolous Latin American Nationalistic candidate's BS (too obscure for many here I suppose and in Spanish) or rather on the Masons, as my grandfather was one, and it has always been a mystery to me.

By no means am I embracing the religion for myself.

I've just always felt the intense desire to scoop up an unpopular view from the cultural quagmire that is popular Americana, and defend it with what meager resources I have available.  I'm not converting to any religion at the moment.

Man........I need to go on a freakin' DATE or something - and I'm not talking about one of those "five-finger" dates.

There are Jehovah's witnesses that come to my door at least every two weeks. I've told them I am a Catholic and not switching religions anytime soon, but they keep coming back (and I guess I am "too nice" to tell them to get lost for good).

I have back-issues of "AWAKE!" if you need them for research purposes (or anything else). I was going to toss them out, but can sometimes find them weirdly fascinating if I am bored with everything else I've got laying around to read. I just can't "get into" a religion that actually believes only X number of people (no more and no less) is going to be allowed into heaven. It just strikes me as outright ridiculous. I sometimes think they should be arrested for false adverstising, because surely as a world-wide organization, they've reached that number already (I forget, but their max-out getting-into heaven number is in the 600 thousands, I think). Maybe they have some explanation for this. If they do, I'd love to hear it. I am going to ask them next time they land on my door-step.

- Susan

LOL! Susan, those Holy Rollers are *still* comming around to your house?
Maybe you could have some fun with them and invite them in for coffee and leave a whip and some handcuffs on the counter in plain sight.
What do they base that "600k" number on anyway?

The guy that runs the site is actually a pagan an gay.

I have told the Jehovah Witnesses that I was Methodist and had a church I went to that I was happy with, they didn't want to believe that so next time I told them I was Catholic....they still came back so I then told them I was Muslim...they STILL came back so I just stopped answering the damn door lol....The ones that come through my neighborhood are pushy and demanding....they once tried to tell my kids that the Easter bunny was evil while they were playing in the backyard so I told them to quote "get the fuck out of my yard and never come back"..that must have worked because they never came back

I wonder if Pat Robertson of one of his ilk ever named his penis "Bible" and asked converts to come up to his room to do some "Bible thumping."

Probably low blood sugar and I should go eat dinner.

the winesses and awake.

well having been a student of the word tried to "walk in the truth"  what i have seen inthe past 25 years of my life is that for the msot part of all of the different religious organizations that i have been a party to.  Is that the jehovahs witnesses for the most part are by far the most likely to "walk the walk and talk the talk"  the phulosphy for their knocking on doors is that they are "witnessing" to the those that may otherwise not run into them had they not made apoint of visisting them.   thei goal is to provide a AA like introduction they tell how thier relationship with the almight has affected thier lives and if they havent had an awe inspiring thing then they are telling you abotu what they believe to be the future if they continue to live they wat they are or could have been.

i have found that many of the "christian assortments"  are quite usually involed in blatant morally opposing things such as living together, children out of wedlock,  living with one man whilest married to someone else.

I thank you treswank for actually reading the awake magazne...i find them to inforamtive...for the most part I do not find them super preachy...super preachy gets me out of the way.

well I hope i havent annoyed or insulted anyone.  Have a nice day

The number is actualy 144,000 and it is mentioned in the book of revalation, as well as numerous other places in the bible. And they do not believe that is all that will be saved, they belive the rest of the rightious will live in a paradise here on earth. Mentioned somewhere in Psalms...I think my "witness" friend said.  Also unlike some religions they don't belive in hell at all (contrary to popular myth).

I personly don't understand why people feel they must bash this religion... They try to live by the bible in their everyday lives, they are well spoken/behaved. I completely disagree that they are mindless or a cult, a friend of mine is one, and she has strong convictions and can back up her beliefs with many scriptures.  As far as I  can tell she is not brain washed. While I don't live as she thinks I should, I do respect her lifestyle. That is what it is.. her whole life refelects her beliefs. Unlike those that go to confession then turn right around and continue doing whatever they confessed as a sin the next day.

I was also impressed with their efforts to help rebuild after katrina, my friend said it was all done on a strictly volunteer basis. They helped not only their brethren but others not of their religion, freely lending time and skills- trying to be "christ like". And yet people would like to bash them..as opposed to all the truly evil things in the world. lol

As for the Awake, it is not published to be a "preachy" magazine, it focuses more on the current events in the world, and gives some soud advice about how to deal with it in a "christ like" way. The watchtower is the one with all the scriptures, and bible subjects.

Also on a parting note..you can thank the "witnesses" for bloodless surgery, and freedom of speach. It was their fighting for their beliefs that got those things started. ;p

Hello A/all,

While I have made comments on this thread which may have been insulting to some.  I want to indicate that I am extremely supportive of people who find happiness and surcease and peace through faith and religion.

Hypocrisy is not a Christian trait, any more than it is a trait of any other belief system.

The story of the film so far is that I have had problems with religious organizations in my past, and then an education in the history of religion.  Couple that with a general distrust of other people telling me what to think, and I find that I can generally pick apart most belief systems presented to me.

What I would be the first to point out is I am not sure my general inability to believe much of anything strongly is necessarily a positive quality, but I am kinda stuck with it.

So for all who have found a spiritual or philosophical lodestone showing them The Way, I commend you and wish you success in your endeavors.

Sinergy

Are you saying the Jehovah's Witnesses (as an organization)...

1 ...had a hand in the drafting of the constitution
- or -
2 ...are you saying there is a pivotal court case in which they were involved (if so, what was it)?

Thank you
