TreSwank, yes it is sad....however I would attribute that more to Saudi Arabia with its extreme Wahhabism sect...which pervades every single aspect of life...which is like no life at all in my opinion. Turkey is usually an example of a modern nation, maybe you went to the more backwards eastern part of the country, I visited Istanbul and it was beautiful and very European in its influences (allright a mix) but very civilized, and was impressed. The Turks I have made acquaintences too were highly nationalistic and anti-extremists, and were "bad" Muslims (they drank, checked out women, etc you get the idea). I think too that some countries resent the American military and therefore the problem I think would lie more with that. I am not saying Turkey is perfect, but Attaturk's reforms were far reaching and pulled that country out of the middle ages, implemented wide state education, and can be an example for the other nations in the region. It is also the only Muslim country to have good ties with Israel, as well as military exchanges, etc. I dunno see I live in Egypt, I am Catholic, and no one ever chastised me or my parents for it...the Americans in the community (in Cairo) were loved and people liked them because they did things for the neighborhood the American School was in...the boy scouts would go around putting street signs in Arabic and English, as well as watering the plants around the area, making that part of the city beautiful. It is important to mentioned that the lower class Egyptians (I am talking back in 1989 or 1990) loved the United States, just chastised its help to Israel as mistaken, but that is about it. The Egyptian elites however despised the Americans, which makes it ineteresting as many have studied in the US or have travelled here. I also lived in Morocco, another muslim country, which was the most liberal Muslim country I have ever been to, and extremely peaceful....we can argue that it is a false sense of peace maintained by the regime of the King....however the new king, Mohammed VI is very liberal and much moe open than his father. Point being, there are many shades of grey in between.
