Robert Gates is evidentially our (US's) Secretary of Defense.  He says we are losing the war in Iraq ("duh") but is confident The Shrub will listen to his ideas.  Ideas?  Like what?  Peace with Honor?

Maybe he is going off the physics principle that "Nature abhors a vacuum."

He might be assuming that in the absence of ideas in Monkeyboy's head, or the capacity to formulate one of it's own, that any idea he gives will be sucked into the vacuousness that is our Simian In Chief's mind.

Sinergy, on behalf of PETA, i have been asked that You cease insulting monkeys and their relatives.  O'course, i have received a tongue-lashing from the eco-terrorist camp for my own "Shrub" references.  W/we need a moniker which is politically correct for the Idiot Missing His Village.

Comparing him to an idiot is an insult to the mentally handicapped.

He's not there yet....but it looks like the Democrats are willing to take anyone as long as it means Rumsfeld is gone. It's a shame though, most have short memories, Iran-contra / The Salvadorian death squad debacle is only twenty years old.

I wonder if he has any plans to put Troops on that Mexican border?
It's getting worse there by the day.
The drug cartels are now decapitating their rivals and leaving them in the desert and taking pot shots at Border Patrol Officers.
They've wounded a few so far , no deaths "yet" though.

How many times do you have to be told that federal law forbids the use of federal troops in law enforcement?

The war is over... what's happening over there now is an occupation.

*This was supposed to be in reply to the OP.

Oooh. So THAT'S the reason dubya had to send our boys osama chasin and Saddam seeking instead of doing the most obvious ONE THING that needed doing after 9/11? Securing our borders? Seems like any reasonable Secretary of DEFENSE should have seen and acted on the defensive imperative 9/11 made so blatantly crystal clear BEFORE taking the offensive overseas?
Aw Hell NO?
Christ where do they get these people?. ..Guess till I manage to escape Dubya's home village down here (TX), I'll just keep right on studying spanish....you know, so I can figure out what all the streetsigns and billboards say. Every Texan should visit the Alamo yearly in rememberance of the fact that Santana is still kickin our asses. With Dubya and his Defense Dimwits finally figuring out how "we're losing the war in Iraq", he's gonna feel even stupider when he gets back home in a couple years and realizes they no longer speak English in his home fucking state.

Federal Troops can be used to stem invaisions as per Section 4 of the Constitution.
Also, the "Law Enforcement" part, "Posse Committatus" applies to *U.S. Citizens* not Foreign Nationals!
That is Federal Troops can't arrest U.S. Citizens.
For example in Iraq and Afganistan our Troops are *arresting* suspected terrorists.
Also, if Bush would just start doing his job he could declare Martial Law along that entire Mexican border.
In that case they could shoot on site anyone who was within a certain designated area.
