*sigh* a little extra cash to make the house I am building self-sufficient (a little solar, a little geo-thermal - whatever).

Naughty?  A few extra tools and supplies to build that dungeon in the basement ;) OH! and a nice (or NOT so nice) woman to use it with me!

fergus

Oh my I'm looking to do the same. I am seriously looking into wood stives to heat my house and big ass greenhouse. Between electric and propane its like a huge money pit.

Wood is not bad ... and if it is for a greenhouse, you can even get and OUTDOOR wood stove so that you will not have to worry about a chimney and the maintenance problems associated with that.

Thats what I'm thinking but still want to get same for my house. I'm going to have someone come look and see if I can share one between the two, my house and greenhouse. Now I wish I had it close to my house. Its about 250 feet so I might have to get another unit. The key is getting something with a hopper or whatever to keep it full and run it right. I can buy them but I can't find someone to install one to my current vents.

sorry for getting off topic. I guess this should have been on my wish list!

Turning into an episode of 'this ol' dungeon'

Have you thought about Geo-thermal?

hmmm .... I think you might have to get two units with that sort of distance.  Also, mind the wood you get, you don't want termites in the house or those Japanese beetles in the green house.

mnottertail -> RE: Ho Ho Ho Here's comes Santa Claus (12/8/2006 8:00:19 AM)

Dear DiannaVesta,

Geo (earth) thermal (heat) is like grabbing heat from ground water, now you go wait a minute, my well water is 44 degrees year round or whatever, and it is like a reverse air conditioner, it robs lets say 1 degree from the water every half second, start adding up degrees and pretty soon you are warm and toasty. You need to pump water in and out constantly, and I am not sure if the laws in your area allow you to put it back in the aquifer (the watersource underground or you have to discharge it surface or another area.

You can put underground tubing between the house and greenhouse built inside a styrofoam tunnel with zone valves at the house and greenhouse so it isn't a matter of two burners.

LOL,
Ron again

I am still hugging that spiffy corn burner.

I just thought of another "want" a winter home someplace warm and tropical, torquoise blue waters, white sand beach, minimal little creepy crawlies, minimal tourists....ahhhhhh heaven

a   wwww yes. I'm dreaming of Costa Rica but by the time I swing that real-estate will be too high.

I had heard some about geo-thermal but honestly I'm not sure about my state or that type of heat. lol- this is funny talking about this here... I guess but we do have a Ladies Garden Forum at Femsupreme, so maybe not....

The key I need is to finish getting the inside working so I'm at least offsetting cost. This doesn't mean I'm not concerned with using energy but that I need it to produce. I eat mostly natural organic so when you factor what I’m spending on produce that isn’t fit for my animals (sort of kidding) it really climbs up there. So I’m growing fish, some fruit trees and produce, might even stick a few of my hens down there sense they don’t seem to want to lay in the cold. So if it pays for itself I’m good.

Are we forgetting solar? You actually MAKE MONEY on your electric bills and in most cases can sell the power to your local co-op or electric company so they are writing you checks for running your farm.

Sky's the limit, hmm?

It is just me or is it a whole lot easier to think of lists of stuff when there are limits? [X(]

I'm feeling pretty blessed this year.  I'd love to start two more businesses, but then I'd also need to have about 60 more hours in each day, so maybe I'll just wait it out a little longer.

But sky's the limit, so I'd want the 84 hour days, I'd work out the rest myself with that [:D]

fergus -> RE: Ho Ho Ho Here's comes Santa Claus (12/9/2006 11:24:24 AM)

I'm a fan of solar as well.

Geo-thermal is good, but more cost effective if you can have the system placed BEFORE the house is built.

Ron is right about the underground pipes and such for the wood-stove.  Some folks even have heated driveways.  But seems an awful price and not terribly efficient to me.

NBC to air new episodes of "Heroes no less than three times a week.  An alpha male slave at my beck and call, one preferably with hands and tongue that possess the most gifted abilities putting my double A's to shame.  [;)]  A fully furnished home with two pools one heated and enclosed for cooler weather, one that has a tropical waterfall.  Um while we're at it, I want a beach house as well, stocked with two lovely male servants to cater to my every whim.  Thank you Santa........Cookies provided once my wishes have been granted.

Rosa

PS......If I only get the one wish, I'll take the NBC show and then NO COOKIES FOR YOU.
