Mikal, where were you when you encountered these tarantulas? Last time I checked, they weren't exactly common in urban Ontario.

I'm not sure what a "bad" purpose would be. If you're thinking that it would be possible to use toxic critters as an weapon a la Kill Bill, that really doesn't work so well in the real world. I've opened a whole lot of boxes containing such things, and the poor things are generally much too scared and disoriented to do anything except run and cower. Your chances of triggering defensive behavior in the organism are quite high when attempting to put it in a given container, but relatively low when that container is first opened. Venomous animals are arguably the world's worst murder weapon.

I was at a banana co-op plantation that spanned the Domican and Haitian border. I've seen what I thought were big tarantulas in Canadian pet stores, and I'm ok with them. The Dominican/Haitian ones though... BIG MAMA'S! If I had a small one that just grew that big, ok. I'd be used to it by then. But to have one following your shadow, and not seeing it before squatting over the loo... not a nice surprise. The locals also told me they were very poisonous. I don't know if that's true or if they were just pulling my leg, but it didn't help matters.

HERMISTON, Ore. - A small spider bite turned out to be a big problem for Cindy Pettey. Pettey awoke when she was bitten on the stomach in the middle of the night a few weeks ago, but thought little else of it. Then she started running a fever, she felt achy and weak. The bite sore became larger.

Next thing Pettey knew, a doctor was telling her he believed she'd been bitten by a dangerous hobo spider.

Pettey had surgery that removed 10 pounds of skin and flesh, leaving her with an abdomen covered in stitches.

So what day are you on now? How's it look?

Just be glad it wasnt a banana spider. Whatched a discovery show on it one night. Looked pretty icky and the guy seemed to die fast. I remember those things trompin around in cow pastures a couple of years ago. Who'd of thought they were so deadly?

BEST remedy for spiders......... scream for your Dom. (it worked well for a yellow jacket that landed on me. I screamed, my Dom looked at me like my hair was set on fire and then obligining flicked the yellow jacket off of me) And if yer Dom isnt around.. be very cautious and see if you can catch em so you can study them later!

The bird-eating spiders are the ones that look the most "creepy" to me... but that's only because they've got the potential for a leg span as wide as a dinner plate.

You're very lucky that it isn't too bad. A week without treatment is asking for trouble.

BTW I'm sure everyone will be delighted that Brown Widows have spread out Florida and have now been seen in Louisianna. Nasty buggers more poisonous than the Black Widow.

Yes, roy, that's one thing they cautioned, that if the red began "streaking", or moving from the bite area, to contact them pronto.

i'm glad you seems to be responding well to medical treatment...

my uncle was bitten some 18 years ago and STILL has problems with his leg. it never did fully heal, and still has issues with drainage sometimes. he was bitten on field manuevers with the national guard and wasnt given prompt medical attention...they were only "pretty positive" it was a recluse because of the locale they were in.

kitten who is terrified of spiders and makes ANY household male come deal with the things. or the husband's g/f if she's the only one around.

the imp is now on archid-assasination duty. permanently. house rules are: any 8 legger in the house has a death wish. period. if they are outside and away from walkways, fine. death wish if they're by the door.

i've been terrified since i was 5, woke up from sleepwalking and was eye to eye to eye (X8 pairs) with a common writing spider. they arent dangerous, but it caused my terror.

as i tell everyone, i KNOW its a mostly irrational terror. i dont care. it doesnt have to make sense.

kitten who made the teenager go check the bathroom for charlotte and all her offsping, and kill any found.....

A few random facts about spiders:

The yellow sack spider (extremely common house dweller) has the same kind of venom as the brown recluse, but it is much less potent. Depending on how sensitive one is to the venom, bites can be anywhere from virtually harmless to (in rare cases) systemic reactions, minor tissue necrosis and scarring.

The black widow starts life tiny and white, then grows larger and brown, then finally turns black only when it reaches adulthood. The "hourglass" design is always present, but is only in sharp color contrast to the rest of the spider's body when the spider is an adult.

Most spiders are less dangerous to humans than the common centipede. (which, by they way, is supposed to have a nasty bite)

Both the wolf spider and triangulate cobweb spider can reach a legspan of around 5 inches. This I can personally confirm from first-hand observation.

Mantids are more entertaining pets than spiders (more active, more interactive), but require about the same amount of care. At least, that's been my experience...

A good way to deter spiders without killing them is a tablespoon of pepermint oil mixed with white vinegar in a spray bottle. the solution will only encourage them to move to a slightly different area, though, so it must be sprayed on absolutely every surface where they are not wanted in order to be effective.
