God sure is one hell of a scientist.

I always find myself a bit puzzled when people talk about being worried about what God thinks of what they do to wonder why a supernatural, omnipotent being would care what I do with my time.

Jesus is coming, look busy.

I did know that.

My first point was more in keeping with the general topic of this thread.

My second point was a joke...

I'm personally an agnostic. I used to think I was an atheist, until I realized it was just as unprovable a position to flatly state their is no god as to state their definitely is a god.

Wonderful post, NeedToUseYou.

A wonderful example of this line of reasoning concerns elephants.

People wondered for years why elephants in the wild would turn from what they were doing and walk toward a water or food source that other elephants were using 10 miles away.  All sorts of theories abounded, including psychic abilities, etc., but none were proven.

So some joker a few years ago put out recording equipment studying extremely low frequency sound waves.  Turns out elephants spend their lives chattering to each other in extremely low frequency sound waves.  Of course, these sound waves travel much, much farther (miles and miles) than sound what humans can hear.

So apparently, elephants can tell each other where the food is when they are 10 miles away.  But until recently, human beings did not understand how or why it happened.

I tend to think the same thing about the whole God question.  The fact that we cannot prove it does not definitively prove it does not exist.

Synergy responded to my little jibe about chicken killers progressing to become primate killers when involved in scientific research by explaining that his friend's research was related to the immune system and would possibly be of use in the opportunistic infections experienced by HIV sufferers.

Since the rate of death as a consequence of HIV/AIDs has not diminished since the 1990's and in fact has increased exponentially I assume the research did not bring forth anything of significent consequence. Just as this chicken suspected. Still your friend does have a PhD.

It would be useful, seeksfemslave, if you would avoid putting words in my mouth.

There is pure science, which would be the study of something to see how it works.

There is applied science, which would be the study of something with the idea in mind that one wants to apply this to something.

I stated that my buddy working on his MD/PhD was working on a research project that would be classifed as "pure science."  He was studying an aspect of biology (immunology of pregnancy) which was not  clearly understood to determine how it worked.  I made the point that if his research led anywhere it might result in other researchers developing cures or treatments for untreatable viral infections like HIV.

A reasonable comparison would be somebody who studies the Hydrogen atom to determine how it works, as opposed to somebody who studies the Hydrogen atom in order to make an engine that will drive your car.

He was not studying the immunology of pregnancy to find a cure for HIV, so the conclusion you draw from your premise is incorrect, because your premise is flawed.

General questions to believers.

Why do people think god is on their side? Why do countries appear to think god is on their side? Why do countries that have been to war an caused mass death and carnage think god would find it acceptable? Why do people who have been defeated in war and subject to mass murder and humiliation still think god is on their side? Why do people who have had terrible tragedies in thier life or have experienced horrendous events think that god is relaying some meaning, some lesson that is to be learnt in such things. Why don't any believers think when they have been through terrible happenings that god just doesn't like them?
