Music publishers, though, see Balch very differently: He's helping people steal the copyrighted sheet music they sell. So over the past several months, they effectively shut down Guitar Tab Universe and several other sites like it.

Chaingang....I hate the music and movie industry since they shut down napster and then destroyed kazaa....I will never pay a dime unless it is a great movie that I want the special scenes and subtitles....I hope congress shuts down those lobbyists or snubs them....sometimes I think the problem with the United States today is the lobbying system, it should be made illegal. End of the story and government comes back for people or at least civil groups.

As one who has lost a partner to suicide- i wish the heading for this post could be more restrained. Nice subject- but with the deepest respect- header is definately saddening to some

My point was simply that by taking from the actual creators the RIAA is killing it's own "brain trust." By taking from guitar tab enthusiasts the RIAA is killing the next generation of musicians. It's madness all around.

I am sorry about your personal matter but there is no way the whole world can watch its words to not offend on this basis. I am personally guaranteed to offend someone somewhere every time I set fingers to keyboard. Certainly you must know it was not my intention to even inadvertently offend someone in your situation - I meant merely to show that the RIAA was attacking the roots of it's own livelihood. My original title was "RIAA Shoots Itself in Dick" but its not really the same thing and doesn't reference the human center of thought and creativity. I am sorry for your loss. I have personally lost more friends to suicide and drugs than I care to say. I know about the guilt, anger and sadness. It sucks.

Artists need to take the wheel and steer their own course, probably without the aid of things like the music and publishing industries as we know them. I have seen arguments in favor of quality control and in support of the gatekeepers, but I have no real sympathy for them as someone that more often admires art on the fringes of things.

Given the advent of digital media self-publishing is probably the way forward. I know many folk artists in the SF area that self-publish and while fame and wealth may elude many of them, they also maintain high levels of control over their own material. To be honest, I'd like to see higher levels of patronage for the arts on the public and private levels. We cannot rely on the marketplace for all things, but of course my political views may be evident to many here already.

Art is a mirror we sometimes have to be made to look into.

I'll just add that music can survive without the "suits", but not the other way around.
