Quick music trivia:

Know the songs "Still the One" and "Dance With Me"? The singer for Orleans, John Hall, was just elected to the congress.

What was your first concert to see? Any memories of it, lol?

Mine was in 1979, I believe, the Pat Travers Band opened (doing new songs like "Crash and Burn", and "Snortin' Whiskey"), and Rainbow headlined. Both bands were terrific, the only glitch coming when Rainbow founder Ritchie Blackmore broke a couple of strings on his guitar, and there was trouble getting things lined out; you could see him getting extremely pissed.

Leaving the venue, my ears rang like never before... but I could still hear myself yelling "Oh shit!!" when we got to my car to find my stereo stolen.

Beatles, 1964, Seattle, I was 5+ (brother took me, Aunt forced him to lol), we sat 20 feet to (facing stage, right) the side, and all I remember (other than a few songs I recognized) was, at 20 feet away, I couldn't hear them for all the screaming.

Yeah, it was just like every TV/news report you saw.

I wish I would have had a concept of what I was seeing.

Both Trent Reznor and Maynard Keenan did a fair amount of work in the studio with each other, the band was to be known as Tapeworm. Sadly, both men have basically shitcanned all of that, but one song made it out, I think; "Passive", on the A Perfect Circle album eMOTIVe, was originally a Tapeworm track called "Vacant".

Yeah, I've got a bit of a 'thing' for trent reznor.  I can hear his influence in Marilyn Manson's work, too.  The eMOTIVe cd is one I do not have, although I do have thirteenth step and mer de noms.  Now I've got to go get that cd!  Pity they ditched Tapeworm, that's a collaboration I'd love to hear.

Thanks for the info!  I'm going to go get that cd tomorrow (and I think while I'm out I'll pick up the new Tool cd, too  [:D]).

good lord what was the name of that guy with the crazy long blond hair in the 70s?  Not Winters - hmmmmm.  [8|]

I just remembered - Jim Dandy/ Black Oak Arkansas.  They opened for someone and I can't remember who.  Probably one of the aforementioned.

Having that lurking in the back of my skull was buggin' me.

mnottertail -> RE: First concert (12/13/2006 9:08:04 PM)

I remember when they opened for Deep Purple.............

I have that CD (now you know how old I am, I was there when electricity came to Arkansas)

LOL,
Great memory MizSuz

It was an Alice Cooper Concert in 1975 (whatever happened to Alice, anyway?...)

He quit for a long time and ended up a good golfing buddy of Bob Hope (seriously lol) then came back in the late 90's with a couple great songs.

SusanofO -> RE: First concert (12/14/2006 5:52:04 AM)

Thanks for the up-date, LTRsubNW. I always wondered what he looked like without the black eye make-up (I liked his music, although by today's standards it almost qualifies as "bubblegum".

You GOTTA have a reprint - I don't think we had CDs yet when that came out.  Good grief, I remember when cassettes were the lastest and greatest (my folks thought they were the shit because we had a reel to reel when the general population was listening to 8 track tapes).  We are old.

Ya know, now that I've remembered who it was that stupid lyric is stuck in my head.

"Jim Dandy to the REEEscue, Jim Dandy to the REEEScue, Jim Dandy to the REEEScue - GO JIM DANDY - GOOOOOO!"

Somebody PLEASE give me something else to replace it!!!!

Still can't think of them all.  I wonder how many times I can edit this post???

My son just reminded me of a few I'd forgotten:

Lacuna Coil
Tantric
Shinedown

It was three bands that played during a small, day long concert in NH that we'd driven up to see.  I remember because I was really wanting to see Shinedown and Lacuna Coil and ended up liking Tantric the best.

Have I hijacked this thread?  I know it was supposed to just be first concerts.  My enthusiasm for the topic has gotten the better of me, I fear.  I apologize if this isn't ok with the OP.

mnottertail -> RE: First concert (12/14/2006 7:28:54 AM)

No, I dont mean my cd is of the concert, I have a CD of BOA...

As you requested Misstress:

Oh Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah,
He's still alive.
Oh, Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah,
A hundred and five.

There was a time early in life
When he gambled to gain
And he carried a knife
And he was winnin' that very night.
He cussed the devil, yes he cussed him good;
He swore he'd lick 'em,
Yes, he swore he could,
And he dared him to come to Him if he would. Yeah!

Oh Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah,
He's still alive.
Oh Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah,
A hundred and five.

It was early in the mornin' when he got to bed
To rest his weary gamblin' head
When he heard the angry words his pappy said:
"Lijiah go and fetch some wood!"
He heard his words and up he stood.
Even though it hurt, he knew he should. Yeah!

Oh Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah,
He's still alive. Still cookin'!
Oh Uncle Li--jiah, Uncle Lijiah,
A hundred and five.

Outside he heard the rattle of chains
And he ran from someone
He thought insane
As he heard the devil
Callin' out his name.
The devil grabbed his suspenders well,
And he trembled
As he felt the hand from hell,
And he let out with a hairy yell.

He jumped in bed with his Maw and Paw.
And he told 'em that the devil was in Arkansas,
And he told 'em he'd quit gamblin' or break the law. Yeah!

Oh, Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah,
He's still alive. Still cookin'!
Oh, Uncle Li--jiah, Uncle Lijiah,
A hundred and five.Yeah!

Oh Uncle Lijiah, Uncle Lijiah
He's still alive. Still cookin', yeah!
Oh Uncle Li--jiah, Uncle Lijiah,
A hundred and five.

I never really cared for Jim Dandy

My first concert was KISS in 1976. It was just before my 10th birthday. My older cousin made the cover story up to the parents & took us to the show. This was the show where Ace electrocuted himself & I think I recall Gene being on fire in this one as well. (but he set himself on fire so often who's to say... LOL)

MizSuz -> RE: First concert (12/14/2006 10:12:27 AM)

I'd forgotten all about that song!  Thanks so much, I believe I may retain some sort of sanity for the day.

I never really cared for Jim Dandy either, it's just the one that got so damned much radio play.

KISS is one of the bands I've never seen, that I truly wished I could have. Even if they came around here now, though, I'd have a hard time paying for tickets, what with imposters playing the parts of Ace and Peter.

Here's the real deal, what you saw [;)], in their prime on the Midnight Special, performing "Deuce".

I lost track of how many times I saw KISS but it was all before 85, however, the first time I saw em was with AC/DC back when Bon Scott (RIP) was still with them.

Thanks for the information, NorthernGent.  I love all of theose bands. [:)]  It won't be possible to head over this month for the Jam tribute show, but we are hoping to attend the Glastonbury Festival next year.

Happy concert going!

Be well,
Julie

Not a problem, Julie. If you like British pop music feel free to try this. They're a new band from Sheffield, this is from their debut album. Average video but catchy song and the rest of the album is well worth a listen. The Long Blondes.

If you're struggling to make Glastonbury there are festivals all over Britain with pretty much the same bands on such as Leeds or Reading so no need to restrict your options.
