SadoCasinero -> D/S school - SALSA CLASSES!!! (12/12/2006 12:31:41 AM)

Hi folks, new to CM..and this by way of intro..I was reading several journal entries from women complaining that the guys just wanted to get them into bed, and it was hard to sort out the lifestyle stuff from the biological imperatives.  Been taking Salsa classes for a few months now and we were talking this evening about how in order to dance it well, the followers have to learn to submit to the lead, and the leaders, generally guys, but there a quite a few women leaders, have to learn to lead smoothly, clearly and decisively in order for it all to work well.  Hmmmm <grins>. And its all happening in a a deliciously sexy, intimate but not inappropriate setting to some great music. What more could you ask!

Thats the basis of all dancing. One has to submit usually the female for the male to lead. Its nothing to do with the lifestyle. It has to do with the fact in ancient times it would be seen as weak to let a women lead.

I remember taking a few ballroom dance lessons before my marriage and the hardest part was my then fiance learning to lead. If he didn't push hard, I couldn't feel where I was supposed to go. I do see the metaphor to D/s, without a strong leader the follower will be lost.

My ex could not dance..did not know how to lead. I led backwards (topping from the bottom?). I hated it.

Dancing is often a great metaphor for all relationships, but definitely for authority based ones as well.  Everyone has to know the steps, learn how to communicate constantly and yet fluidly, lead and follow- and an expert dancer can cover up just about any weaknesses in their partner.

I like this thread- it's probably because I love to dance. It is one of my great passions in life.

To me, learning to dance with a partner is not just about leading and following, because in certain sections of each dance, the roles may switch- women certainly get some of the initiative in the Tango! From that perspective, I see it less as a D/s sort of practice (as much as I would love to convince my Dom to dance with me...unfortunately, I think it intimidates him a bit....)

When you have danced long enough (and close enough to a partner- no looking at feet with a foot of space between you!), you learn an interesting skill- to know the person's movements and future movements before they actually make them, just by touching any part of them to any part of you (most commonly through hip-to-hip contact). For this, ballroom dances are especially intimate- to know your partner (and by proxy, many partners), just though the contact you share with them. A successful leader and follower are made by this.

To apply this to a D/s setting- it is knowing your partner well enough to anticipate their actions, and to be able to follow accordingly for the submissive, and being a reliable leader who makes sure there is always a place for the submissive partener to step and follow the Dominant partner to. To know each other so well by touch that it says more than any verbal instruction. To understand that without a follower, there is no leader; and without a leader, no follower.

Each D/s relationship is unique- and so is every dance. Personally, this is one of my favorite parts.
