That's just wrong.  It's from the verb "soppressare," meaning "to put something under pressure."

Been to BC twice in winter. Loved every minute of it. I wasn't on the coast where it rains and drizzles, but on the Canadian Rocky side. More like New England weatehr with out the Nor Easters.
