I think a lot of these suggestions are outstanding. The one book I didn't see (skimming) though was Delta of Venus Erotica by Anais Nin. I found this book when I was 17 and I loved it.

I add my vote to those who liked the Marketplace series. I read the entire series and wish there was more. As a matter of fact, I just picked up Exit to Eden, by Anne Rice (under the same pen name as the Beauty series, I believe), and I'm only into the first few chapters, but so far find it more similar to the Marketplace books than the Beauty books. Of course, that may change as I continue into it.

I also enjoyed the Bottoming Book and especially Erotic Surrender: The Sensual Joys of Female Submission , although it's been a couple years since I read these.

I didn't agree with a lot of what was written in a book called Kink, (purchased at my local bookstore), but I still found it an interesting read, although a bit disturbing.

I have seen the ones most typically mentioned, Screw the Roses, SM101, The Loving Dominant, etc., on sale in the local bookstores (Barnes and Noble and/or Borders) under the relationship section. I've also seen them for sale at the local adult toy store as well.

Happy reading and I'm glad for more recommendations!

I pulled part of this from another posting I did, but also added to it since you're probably interested in the more male Dominant focused books...

Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns - A great book, written from a Dom, female sub point of view. It is probably the best overall book, and one that should be in your library. It is also a bit overwhelming for someone new to the lifestyle.

The New Topping Book- This has been my favorite of all the books so far. I found it to be accessible and easy to read. This book is more of a S/m book, but a lot of the concepts are the same. I highly recommend it.

The Loving Dominant - I enjoyed the author's sense of humor. This is a good intro book that isn't too overwhelming.

The Family Jewels: A Guide to Male Genital Play and Torment - This is a good introduction to the male genital anatomy. Sooner or later, all Domme seem to use some sort of penile interaction. It is a wonderful source of control. Learn how to do it safely.

Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual - This is the one I'm in the middle of reading now. It is also basic material, but covers some stuff not done in the other books. The style is easy to follow. It isn't overly wordy, so it isn't an intimidating book. It is a good overview book, touching lightly on many subjects and is one you can actually imagine yourself reading cover to cover. I'd say it plus either "Sexually Dominant Woman" or "Art of Sensual Female Dominance" will get you on your way. One thing.. the author tries to make it pansexual and her use of pronouns can get confusing. She'll change the sex of the sub in the middle of a paragraph at times.

S&M: Studies in Dominance & Submission - Ok book, not my favorite, but one I'm still glad to have in my bookshelf. It looks at S/M from a sociological standpoint.

The Sexually Dominant Woman: A Workbook for Nervous Beginners - This book is good for a beginner. It isn't overwhelming. It talks some about the mental state of a new Dominant. It is worth picking up and having a look.

The Art of Sensual Female Dominance: A Guide for Women - This one is also a good candidate for a beginner. I'd order both into Barnes and Noble or whatever local store of yours does special ordering and glance through both. Pick up the one that catches your attention better. They both contain about the same information.

My personal BDSM bookshelf includes:
Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns, The Loving Dominant, The New Topping Book, The Sexually Dominant Woman: A Workbook for Nervous Beginners, The Art of Sensual Female Dominance, The Mistress Manual: The Good Girl's Guide to Female Dominance, The Family Jewels: A Guide to Male Genital Play and Torment, S&M: Studies in Dominance and Submission, Miss Abernathy's Concise Slave Training Manual, Training With Miss Abernathy, SM 101: A Realistic Introduction, The Manipulated Mind: Brainwashing, Conditioning and Indoctrination, Knots & Splices, Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing People and Words That Change Minds: Mastering the Language of Influence, Masochism: A Jungian View and Dominant Women Submissive Men: An Exploration in Erotic Dominance and Submission.

The books on my "to get" list:
Female Dominance (Sutton), Dominance, self-esteem, self-actualization: germinal papers of A. H. Maslow (The A. H. Maslow series), The Mastery of Submission: Inventions of Masochism (Cornell Studies in the History of Psychiatry), The Bonds of Love : Psychoanalysis, Feminism, & the Problem of Domination, Erotic Power: An Exploration of Dominance & Submission, Partners in Power: Living in Kinky Relationships, The Compleat Slave: Creating and Living an Erotic Dominant/Submissive Lifestyle, Different Loving : A Complete Exploration of the World of Sexual Dominance and Submission, The Ethical Slut: A Guide to Infinite Sexual Possibilities, Bitch Goddess: The Spiritual Path of the Dominant Woman, The Compleat Slave: Creating and Living an Erotic Dominant/Submissive Lifestyle, A Hand in the Bush: The Fine Art of Vaginal Fisting, The Art of Seduction and Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook. (Did I mention I'm a compulsive reader? LoL)

This is sort of a related question which is prompted by my search for books.

In my lazy quest to gather some BDSM learning material I have always relied on Amazon.com - they are huge, so I figured that if they don't carry it no one will. Plus they often discount their books.

Recently, I was told that one of the books I ordered was out of stock and could no longer be ordered by Amazon. Ok, though I, books go out of print - I will look for a used copy. (and bought the book from Half.com)

But as I poked around the web I noticed a few online sellers that specialize in BDSM books. They actually had the book I wanted in stock and although the price was a couple dollars more, it would have been no big deal.

My question is... is it better for us as a community to patronize the specialty bookstores? After all they have and will stick with us through thick and thin. (Although I have heard one of them, Greenery Press, will stop being a publisher)

Is it okay to shop at Amazon simply out of laziness or to save a couple bucks? After all, they will carry any book regardless of its topic - they just want a sale.

If someone is fortunate enough to live in a town with a Barnes and Noble or a Borders I am thinking that shopping for books there would help to 'mainstream' our market and eventually increase the selection to choose from. But right now the selection is a bit limited.

Does anyone have any opinions about this?

One of my current Barnes and Nobles has a decent sexuality section with BDSM as equally represented as the rest of the topics. The rest of them.. if they have Different Loving in stock, you should dance for joy. *sigh*

I do like to patronize the smaller business owners when I can, but do to realistic considerations (shipping on a huge order) I'll sometimes choose Amazon over them. :-(

I stopped by my local 1/2 Price books today, just to see. They had a pretty decent stock. I've never heard some of the books they carried, but there were quite a few i had heard of. They had The Loving Dominiant, SM 101, and the entire Beauty series.

I went with one i've never heard of, we'll see how it is. Anyone hear of Come Hither? It's by the same lady that wrote Different Loving, but looked more for beginners (that's me ). I've read a few pages and so far, so good.

I'm curious about where you heard that Greenery Press was going to stop publishing books. I hadn't heard that, so I went and took a look at their latest newsletter to see if there was any mention. What I saw was a notice that they had just settled into a new location. I would have thought that meant they were still doing what they do so well, not closing shop.

More info on the source of this would be appreciated. :)

An author of several books stated it yesterday in a Yahoo group on spirituality. The topic was his difficulty in getting his current manuscript published.

Hi, I did mention Come Hither. I enjoyed when I first read and still enjoying refering back to it now and then.

leigh,

It's not a big deal, I just wanted to let you know it was mentioned. "Come Hither" not being mentioned more than once or twice, might have something to do with the fact that it's more beginner oriented and those just looking for a bit of insight about some of the workings of those that are wired outside of the mainstream's idea of what so called normal sexuality is. This book is less about technique though you will find it contains techical quidance as well. By the time many start looking for reading material, they are probably past the stage of whats normal and more looking to learn ways to expand on technique.

Amazon is a great source for finding many titles, some new and used. When you type in the title of a book you are looking for, it will also list others plus a side list of some readers recommendation. Believe it or not my library used to carry CH, but it appears someone swiped the book and they never reordered. Could be that they just didn't want it on their shelves.

One more book I simply must mention...9 1/2 Weeks by Elizabeth McNeil. It is out of print, and somewhat hard to find, but if you want, email me and I could lend you my electronic copy, as long as you destroy the electronic version when you are done.

Also, I don't think I saw anyone mention Panic Snap or Topping From Below by Laura Reese. I preferred Topping from Below, (though both are interesting.) It is a murder mystery, where the sister of the victim enters the realm of BDSM to track down the man she feels is responsible for her sister's death.

I also have a new one I've not started yet, Murder at Roissy. It has very mixed reviews.

STORY OF O, STORY OF O, STORY OF O... Oh i know so many people love it, some people hate it, some people just don't get it, some people go eww, it's just so French, but for me Story of O is like the lost book of the Bible, the third Testament, a secret history of my sex delivered in the dark of the Parisian night to the submissive womankind of the earth by a merciless angel or devil, it's the most dangerous and erotic and beautiful and mysterious and seductive book i've ever read (and read and read and reread hundreds of times, i have a dozen paperback copies of various ages with pages falling out and stuck together, i know whole pages of it by heart, i could recite them in my sleep), the book that shocked me by flooding my virginal teenage panties and making my hands shake and my heart race and my face flush, the book that scared me senseless and seduced me for all time and changed my life forever when i first read a dirty dogeared passed-around copy at the tender age of fifteen, because i found in Story of O the name for my true secret identity that was locked deep in my soul and my cunt, my secret self with the awful dark impossible desires that no one else in the world could possibly share, the secret identity that i thought no one else in the whole world could know -- and that name was O, and i was alone and nameless no more...
