The Singapore community numbers, in at 50 (conservative estimate). Others put the number at 2000. Members acknowledge that it's a fledgling one.

My question is... where do you live, and what is the rough size of the community where you are? Would you consider your community mature?

I've just relocated.  Lived in California before and people who came out to groups within the community were high.  Statewide, hard to even guess.  In the tens of thousands.
Living in the midwest now.  People who come out to groups, incredibly low.  Though everyone you talk to everywhere lives a power exchange relationship and dabbles in BDSM now and then.  Yet, they do not go into the public announcing it.

Hard to judge...as far as mature people.  Definately the midwest over California any day of the week.  Very few couples in California..most just swap partners.

To me the lifestyle is defined as the entire lifestyle...not just the play aspect.
So, midwest is more mature.

i live in Maui....we have a munch once a month....its in the food court at the mall.....2-4 people show up for it....

however i also run an add on CL and i get one kinky person replying a week....with maybe 9 out of 10 having real life time experience, but very limited to light bondage, blind folds and spanking.....

i get "kink interested folks" writing every day.

i still have yet to meet any one from the "community" into mummification, breath play, whipping, boot blacking, shibari, animal play, and all the the other stuff i like

Our local community in Pittsburgh has several munches and SIG's meeting monthly.  I'd guess that there are somewhere around two to three hundred relatively active people in the community.  Our monthly workshop averages thirty to forty people, depending upon the topic.

wow, that's amazing. your community sounds so much less.. secretive! it's quite hard for me to imagine it really.

were things ever creepy for you then, as a novice? some private messages i get from people based in my country give me the creeps, and knowing that there are only *so* many people who can accept anything other than vanilla sex here really sours things a bit.

Around here is kinda difficult to judge.  You can either leave St. Louis in this guestimate or not, as it's only about 120 miles away from this area.  Areas with any activity at all in this region are spread out so far, it's hard to decide who to include and who not to.

If you leave out St. Louis, I'd give a liberal guestimate of around 1200 people covering Cape Girardeau, Springfield, and Poplar Bluff, Missouri - as well as all of Far Southern Illinois, south of I-64.  But all these people and places are stretched over 8 hours driving time, east to west, and about 5 hours driving time, north and south.

Munches are usually pretty tame affairs.  I've never been to one that's topped 30, for sure.  Again, leaving out St. Louis, there aren't any real large weekend events or anything down this way.

For the most part, the ages of the players are "mature".  They usually fall in the range of late 30s to late 60s.  We're in the minority, being 24 and 30, respectively.  The styles of play could be considered mature and responsible.  Most of the groups are younger than 10 years old, I'd say.

In conclusion, I guess I'd rate the community around here in it's "Tween Years".  Not really young, but not old either.  Respectable, but not famous.

Hope this sheds some light,
~MrsShadows~

No idea of the origin on the term.  We boot blacked our combat boots in the military though.

It is shining shoes...well boots.
