I hate clutter. My rule is, if it hasnt been used/needed in six months, it gets thrown. Without mercy.

My ex meanwhile, is a hoarder. When we shared the apartment I live in now, it was filled within a year. We then moved to a house four times larger - that took two years to fill. No exaggeration - it was necessary to perform gymnastics to step through the boxes of crap that "might come in handy one day" stacked in every room, doors were either held open by stacks or only possible to open so far because of clutter. Every surface was at least 6 inches deep with more clutter, and cupboards wouldnt close because of the bursting in all directions crap inside. And this with a cellar 10 x 10 x 8, filled from bottom to top too.

And the joke is, that the divorce is on the grounds of my unreasonable behaviour.

E

Books (printed and on tape) are one of the few things that are still cluttering my life.  Oprah's advise, "If you haven't used it in a year and it has no sentimental value - throw it away."  I wouldn't part with my Pema Chodron tapes, even if I hadn't listened to them in a year.  I still have difficult parting with books, even text books.

Me too, LadyEllen.  I was married to a pack rat for almost 30 years.

Read the books and then mail them back. As for the ones you have, there's Half Price Books where you can sell some of them and a local library you can donate to.

When it comes to having to much clutter, that's what the Salvation Army is for. Also, don't forget to recycle.

Yeah! Throw it away! And then buy a new one when you do need it/want it/wish to give it to somebody who will use it. (There's a word for that now - freecycling. 'Giving stuff to people who want it if you don't' isn't good enough, obviously.) ;)

Every object in my life is dispensible, besides my books (I don't mind them not being in my possession, I merely wish them to continue to exist and be loved and read), and my kung fu hustle wrist thingumy.

Clutter isn't a bad thing.. I sometimes thing that it might be a bad thing if people use their things to keep themselves in (the Sims do).. But we keep our memories elsewhere all the time and don't greatly suffer.
