Since, YOU are the DOM.  You should be able to dress as you like.
Are you the one in charge?
Many believe this lifestyle means wearing "fetish wear" a lot.
I disagree, you should be able to dress in any manner that pleases you.
Especially if you are the Dominant partner.
Many of us own little fetish wear, I don't need it.

eyesopened -> RE: Dressing "Domly" (12/16/2006 5:57:59 AM)

i have always been attracted to bikers so i tend to notice a man in denim and leather.  i would discourage men from trying to wear clothing that isn't congruent with their personality or body type just to appear more "domly" .   i admit to the bad habit of judging a man poorly if he wears plaid slacks anywhere other than on the golf course and that would go for knickers too, but that's just my opinion.

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: Dressing "Domly" (12/16/2006 7:13:48 AM)

Clothes can definitely send a message, whether intentional or not.  As long as he's not constantly doing the "I don't give a shit" look, then it really doesn't matter to me.  I think it boils down to dressing in a way that expresses You and how you feel, and dressing appropriately for the place you are going. [:)]

I think hat you dress for the occassion......If I am goig to a formal function I dress in a suit, if I am changing oil in the car i wear coveralls...etc.   When I go to a munch I will wear black shirt and dress slacks but in a party or scene I like my leather chaps, thong , boots and chain harness.  And just as an aside I was at the club one evening after attending a retirement party so I didn't have time to change ...and more than one person there said I looked way too "civilian" !!!

juliaoceania -> RE: Dressing "Domly" (12/16/2006 7:59:18 AM)

To dress domly in my mind means that one knows how to be appropriate for the occassion. In other words he will dress correctly for whatever the activity we are engaged in is. I do not have a defined sense of what this may entail. I like leather stuff ok I suppose, but the whole dom in a leather vest and chaps thing really does not turn me on personally. I like preppy dress, but only if out to dinner or a show or dancing. On a daily basis I love a man that wears old tshirts, tattered shorts, and has not shaved that day... I love a scruffy hard working guy. I love worker sweat...

...women were polled to ask what they liked best on a man, a white tshirt and jeans got the most votes... so perhaps I am not that strange[:D]

Dear SlaveAkasha, Ladies and Gentlemen;

In my mind's eyes I see, being 'Leather' does not necessarily require wearing leather and or any assortment of gear.  It is more of an self definition rather than the clothing one wears.  Although, in the early days of Gay Leather, the groups formed mostly wore the attire they did due to the riding of motorcycles, so it was more functional.

That said, the individuals in the lifestyle need to understand that what is worn, what is said, what is done is a statement of themselves; no different than in the work place, in sport and or any daily activity.
What costume one chooses to place on, is merely the wrapper and not always the true manifestation of the person within.

However, in wearing the Dominant's uniform of choice; it is hoped that they do so in consideration of others as well.

In my mind's eyes I see; with the current selections of clothing and footwear offered; if a chap wished to wear tennis shoes why cannot that chap swap white for a black pair of tennis shoes.  Little changes.
Instead of moth eatten blue jeans or cut offs, why can't the chap purchase a black pair of jeans and or a black pair of shorts.  The T-shirts offered these days, the white can be swapped for a black one.
Furthermore, this lifestyle understands the cost involved to be fitted out with leather and such however black has been traditionally the color for a long while.  In addition, I would say with confidence, that those in the lifestyle most likely, do not wish to see people spend money they cannot afford on clothing but, rather the priorities be on maintaining their lives.  So, even though black would be appreciated it isn't mandatory but, hopefully it is clean.

At some venues, there is a "Leather swap."  Those who have out grown their leathers put it on a table, as to be swapped for someone who has leathers that fit better.  Leather goods from clothing, gear and whips and the like.  It is where the community can clean out their closets and gain something if they wish.  This is how, in my early days, people got into their leather clothing in a inexpensive manner.

I can only speak for my own experiences in dungeon spaces; that wearing black isn't distracting when in motion.  When wearing white, it attracts light, so when there is something passing that is light and moving, I am distracted.  It is no different than the reflection of diamonds capturing shards of light and bouncing out.  Mimes come to mind, where they wear black but white gloves as to focus on the hands and not the body.

Outside the dungeon though, slaves and Dominants a like may be seen in a variety of attire and it isn't always black and or leather.  However, personal hygiene and attention to their appearance is extremely appreciated.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Archer is very right, the message one intends to give by one's clothing is NOT the message that is recieved. To illustrate, using Archer's three examples of ways to dress to portray a sense of power

Suits can do that, leather can do that, uniforms can do that, the idea being how does a person who is in control dress?

To me they do rather the opposite, a suit to me indicates a person who has sold themselves, who does as they are expected to. A person dressed in lots of leather who has not just gotten off a motorcycle to me says "insecure, wants to be thought of as tough, not really to be taken seriously". And as for uniforms, to me they generally just say "on the job"

Well now don't be so hasty. [;)]  My Dad still has a couple of leisure suits and some white leather loafers from the 70s and he swears they'll come back in style................ eventually.  [&:]

Nothing screams confidence and domliness like navy blue polyester with white stitching, paired with a halfway buttoned loud print knit shirt, white loafers and a white belt... and and the gold chain with an eagle pendant. [8|] [sm=hewah.gif]  LOL!  Ummm, no offense to anyone who has a leisure suit fetish. [sm=lol.gif]

Well ... for men ... I'd recommend not wearing a dress, heels, a bra, panties, or pearls.

I had a very similar experience.  I happen to love fetish wear and don it whenever possible.  Even at a munch or slosh, you will probably find me in a black leather skirt, garters and stockings, a thong, and very high heels.  The top varies with my mood and the weather from a sheer blouse with no bra to a tight, low cut sweater.  I was forced to have surgery on a joint in one of my feet this summer and cannot yet get into those 4 and 5inch heels.  Because of this, I had to 'dress down' at recent event that I attend monthly.  I hadn't been there 15 minutes when someone came over and demanded to know why 'my skinny little ass wasn't in leather.'  LOL  Some of us just like the look of fetish wear, plain and simple.  I've bought pieces one at a time over the years and some of them have been gifts.  We are certainly not eating bologna sandwiches so I can look the way I want.

MrrPete -> RE: Dressing "Domly" (12/16/2006 4:48:14 PM)

LadyHugs -right-on

AT a dungeon or party I generally wear black and a leather vest. Every now and then I
feel like "kilting up" which usally from the waist down I'm in kilt. kilt hose, sporin and
black shoes. I'll done my Scottish bonnet with it sprig of heather because I'm not
authorized to wear feathers. But I still wear a black shirt and a leather vest most of
the time.

Then on more formal occaisions I'll go full highland dress. See my profile for pics.

Since the advent of the internet the influx of people has been so fast and
overwhelmimg we don't have the time to teach what is proper and most of them don't
care.

happypervert -> RE: Dressing "Domly" (12/16/2006 4:59:47 PM)

The domliest alpha doms wear blue tee shirts with a big round emblem on the front, blue shorts, cycling shades and hiking boots.

<snip>

Fuck. There's a bummer. No time to teach new people to dress 'properly'? Whatever will we do. Leather might go out of fashion. Can you imagine? THE HORROR!!! ;)

I look forward to a world where I can wear black and not be a goth, emo, pervert, or Johnny Cash. And to a world where I can wear whatever the hell I like, and still be an evil sadistic masochostic perv.

But I am just a perve, not a scene person. (They wouldn't let me in - I was wearing shorts and skate shoes.)

MstrssScarlet -> RE: Dressing "Domly" (12/16/2006 5:12:41 PM)

Even if you're not a dom, leather is still fun.  My personal submissive generally wears black dress slacks and either a black dress shirt or white shirt with black leather vest.
