Some don't know to turn security on their router.

But I know of at least one woman who deliberately leaves her WiFi router open for anyone to use as a protest against her high cable bill.

There's also a couple of altruistic groups who give away WiFi modems in exchange for your agreeing to let others use it.

Petruchio,

Can you name for me any of those altruistic groups for free wifi??? My entire apt building would love to share wifi...

Petruchio -> RE: wifi (12/15/2006 11:34:40 PM)

Sure.

Fonera was the main one I had in mind. At present, I notice they now charge $29.05€ for the router instead of the $5 deal they used to have. Check their web site to see how the service works:
http://www.fon.com/

They have different programs but the gist is kind of an open community. If you offer free service, you get free service in return.

You can also find free router deals from time to time offered occasionally by Vonage, AOL, Dell, etc, and if you check newegg.com or tiger.com, you can usually find rebates bringing the price down to little or nothing. (I hate rebates myself.)

D-Link and other manufactuers active court Mac users, but even if you get LinkSys, it can be set up using any computer. In fact, I have never yet used their 'Wizard'.

Even if you don't go the FON or similar route, consider getting the residents to chip in a couple of bucks each month to buy the highest speed DSL service you can get and then divide it amongst the residents.

I can go most anywhere and pick up free internet service.  It boggles my mind how people just have no concept of security.
Maybe they don't realize people can get into their pcs.  Infect them with viruses that can make them lose everything...or better yet steal their information they have stored on the pc.  Bank accounts..etc.
It is a wonder identity theft isn't larger than it already is.

You especially don't want anyone inside your firewall.

It is possible to allow others to piggyback on your wireless router while keeping a secure LAN, but Windows users especially should be cautious.

No matter whether or not you allow piggybacking, ALWAYS change the ADMINISTRATOR password on your router, so that a malicious person cannot modify your settings.

The USER password is blank, if you want to allow piggybacking or set to non-blank if you don't share.

If you set your router to passive mode, no one even knows it's there.

I use macs, and don't keep credit card details on my puter. My terminals are all protected work groups, and I have no problem with people using my wifi. I think fences create more thieves than gold

That's why some who buy it give it away.

FullCircle -> RE: wifi (12/16/2006 5:35:32 PM)

I would never leave an open network for anyone as it’s those that want to hide their tracks that exploit such situations. WEP is pretty weak WPA-PSK is better as it re-encrypts the key at intervals. It’s claimed to have never been broken.

I don’t want people’s dirty habits going through my ISP connection. People must be mad to leave wireless networks open to criminal activities such as downloading sick images.
