twicehappy -> Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 5:10:20 AM)

It seems to me that here on the boards there is a disturbing trend to post a statement that our opinions are our own. Or worse yet to feel the need to include an apology in the contents of our posts just in case it offends others whose idea of WIITWD is vastly different from our own.

To my mind it has seriously affected our ability to post freely our opinions, thoughts or ideas lest we be branded a "one true wayer" or "real" or "true" or a "holier than thou" type.

In the interest of giving my fellow posters a chance to cover their collective and individual butts when posting i have started this thread.

Want to avoid those extra paragraphs we all seem to feel the need to write stating that our posts are our opinion, only our opinion and not intended as a legal statement or a direct attack on other posters who may be sensitive to certain terminology we have used?

Eliminate those pesky flame wars and post your disclaimer here.

It will be publicly filed where it may be viewed at any time thereby freeing you from all that extra typing or being held accountable for hurt egos, psyches or offended demands for apologies.

I hope this does not constitute an irritating social fauxpas...
but, ahhh, what a breath of fresh air.

No, your carpets and legs are all safe so far ............

Don't forget to post your disclaimers though.

SusanofO -> RE: Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 5:36:02 AM)

My standard, self-defensive disclaimer is: "This is just my opinion"

Which I'd think would be obvious, but usually if I don't say this, almost no matter what topic it is, there will be people taking "issue" with my (usually diplomatically stated) opinion.

As if I'd intended to offend someone by merely stating it.

Example: I say knifeplay scares me because it seems (key word) extra dangerous. Someone (not everyone, but at least one person) will inevitably respond along the lines of:

"How can you say knifeplay is dangerous?! It's no more dangerous than spanking!" (This - stated sans any "proof" whatsoever).

I dunno - it strikes me as dangerous, no matter how "practiced" someone is. Your opinion may differ, but it doesn't make me feel any more secure. Okay?!!!

MrrPete -> RE: Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 7:01:58 AM)

That was priceless.

Having been the administrator of several MBs and mailing lists I have had my share of
flame wars to stamp out.

Flame wars start when someone attacks another person rather than stating why they
disagree with their opinion. Attacks can be as simple as "you're wrong" and we've all
seen the more vitriolic variety.

When you disagree with someone else's post simply express YOUR opinion why you do.

People often express opinions that have no basis in fact but is still THEIR opinion.
Just make sure you stay in the first person [talking about yourself and your opinion].
Once you go into third person the match has been lit. ["you're wrong"; "you're stupid"
etc] How far the flames go depend the level of vitriol and how fast the administrator
can get out the fire extinguisher.

Of course if you want to give props to someone that is perfectly OK. We can all use a
warm fuzzy now and then.

The administrator or Mod has the responisbility to stomp out ...stop flame wars as
soon as possible after they start. The board can quickly get out of control if they
don't.

Why does a duck have webbed feet?
For stomping out flame wars. [was forrest fires]
Why does an elephant have flat feet?
For stomping out smouldering ducks

It is better to be thought a fool
than to open one's mouth and
remove all doubt.

Diplomacy: The art of telling someone where to go
in such a way they actually look forward to the trip.

(nod) Clever.

Lotus Song's Disclaimer:

"My opinions are based on my actual life experiences, if you are offended, I suggest you get over yourself".

SweetSarijane -> RE: Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 7:27:20 AM)

<grinning> Love how you put that Lotus Song.

SweetSarijane -> RE: Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 7:31:31 AM)

Ok, my turn. I speak from opinion based on my experience and knowledge gained throughout my life to date. I also speak from my view and/or opinion based on info given in the question. My views and opinions are mine. Take from it what works and discard the rest.

mistoferin -> RE: Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 7:33:00 AM)

LOL twice. I agree. I actually made a similar post a long time ago. The fact is though that we could post 32 page disclaimers on every post we make and cover every possible scenario we can imagine and some people will still continue to try to "force" you to change your mind, call foul, twist your words in an attempt to discredit you, sideswipe you, condescend to you, outright flame you, etc., etc.....  All the disclaimers in the world aren't going to make miserable, petty people open their minds and realize that every opposing opinion or viewpoint is not a personal attack on them or theirs.

ShreveportMaster -> RE: Disclaimers! (12/16/2006 7:33:41 AM)

My opinions are Mine...they are nonetheless correct, and make far more sense than anything you are likely to come up with. If this offends you, please feel free to take a nice long swim in lake Idontgiveashit. [:D] (Note, this applies only to opinions, not facts. If I am verifiably wrong, I appreciate having this pointed out, so I can have the correct information...but you'd better have proof!)

                               I wish you well,

Lmao....you are right of course but now we have declared our intention to have the good pup pee on their carpets so we cannot get sued when he does.
