I was reading the attached article about illegal immigrants picking fruit and olive harvests in southern Europe. The work these migrants are doing is exactly the work I and many of my generation did when we were young to help finance our travels around the continent. If you got your timing right you could work most of the year starting in France then going to Spain and then moving east to Italy and then to Greece around Christmas. There one would meet up with young people from all over the continent plus Americans and Canadians and even the odd Japanese. Spend winter on the Greek islands and then go north to Germany and France and find seasonal work in spring. Now you see very few young people travelling around the continent (I travel and don't see them) and apparently all the seasonal work is done by illegal migrants. Of course to us, sleeping rough in barns and old sheds was an adventure, we had decent homes waiting for us once we got the itch in our feet cured. These migrants are just being used and abused.

Young people still pick fruit to finance their travels in Australia. I don't think we have that many illegal immigrants here, maybe its too far to swim.

The woofer system is really good too, young people, or any person really, can travel around and get accomodation for a few hours work at different places who at connected with the network.

Maybe Rangel's idea with regard to every citizen serving two years with an agency like Amercorps isn’t half bad. Two years picking fruit in the hot Arizona sun at 7.50 an hour to subsidize the farming industry while learning /understanding what a solid work ethic is, doesn't sound bad to me. [;)]
