and thought i would share it here.

This man is dangerous and is somewhat linked to BDSM..Anyone know
him?

The US Marshall's Office contacted Snakepit Leather's while trying
to
locate this fugitive. It seems he advertised one of Snakepit's Signal
Whips
for sale. I do not recognize the guy...do any of you? If so contact
the
US

George Carlin had a good idea when he proposed putting arseholes into a giant pit and giving them nothing but PCP and booze... oh and clubs and such. He also wanted to put it on T.V. and charge for it - like Pay per View.

OK good, i stand corrected. I figured it would be removed because the the one about internet predators of minors a few weeks ago was.

Status: offline 		I'm wholeheartedly against molestation of minors, but does anyone but me see a problem with the fact that according to the Marshalls' report, a computer repairman apparently ran across these documents during a routine repair and took it onto himself to turn them over to police? I'm sure there's no small number of us who want our computer records to remain private, including many like me whose files don't contain anything illegal but who prefer that private things remain exactly that - private.

That is a very sticky question. Normally, I'd say privacy is important. However, when you become aware of an illegal act, if you don't report it, you become, in my eyes, morally liable for the crime also. It is one thing if we're talking about a friend stealing cable that you don't turn in. We are talking about abuse of someone unable to defend themselves in this case.

When you give someone access to your system, they are going to have access to your personal information. The administrator account on your computer has access to everything, and if someone is doing maintenance they need to use that account. This is one reason for having someone trustworthy doing your maintenance. Better yet, learn to do it yourself.

There are programs designed to protect your privacy. There is a program called PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) you can use to encrypt the data and the person would need access to your private key to get into the information.

By the way, just deleting something from your hard drive, doesn't make it gone. The way the FAT file system on most computers works, it leaves the data out there, just removes the pointer to it in the index and marks the space as available for use. It will get overwritten as new space is needed. (very simplistic model.. NTFS is a bit better.) Even if something is overwritten, it is still recoverable. There are programs you can get to wipe your hard drive clean. You can find those by searching google for "file shredders". Even those are not foolproof, but they can increase your piece of mind by making it impossible for anyone short of the FBI to recover the data. To be totally sure data on your hard drive is non recoverable, crack the drive open and totally destroy the platters.

Status: offline 		In Canada, counsellors, social workers, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists (well you get the picture), by law, must report certain statements to the police. Those kinds of statements are not covered by confidentiality clauses. Any known harm to minors, any threatened harm of others, any threat to self-harm must be reported. Given the nature of what the technician discovered he may have made a moral choice.

Status: offline 		The way I read it was he ran across the photo's of the perp and the minor, so I would think that anyone that sees photographs of an adult involved in illegal activities with a minor would report it. They did not run across run of the mill "porn" they ran across documents of the accused and the victim.

Status: offline 		I noticed it immediately, and remembered someone else a while back who took their computer in for repair had some adult natured stuff that "Just popped up" as the repairman stated! It's guy's like this who make me wish they still hanged people for sexual offenses against children 13 and under. While I am glad the mods are willing to help bring this guy to justice; let us all take notice of the geek puter repairman! It's a dam good incentive to learn how to repair your own computer!

I absolutely cannot fault the technician for doing a) what he was obligated to do, and b) what was ethically the right thing to do. In this instance, and the crime being what it was, there's just no question. He needs to be caught.

Status: offline 		I believe that the repairman did what was a moral course. i would not hesitate to do the same.
In the uk, and here in australia, abuse must be reported, its not covered by confidentiality. Most countries would endorse this.

As for PGP. Thats cool, unless of course, the person hacking your system is a systems analyst, as was mine. And private hacker. There are NO systems that cannot be broken into. Having lived with a hacker, i can tell you, they're need to hack your system (such voyeurs somepeople) is a great motivator and gets their creative juices flowing until they succeed.
PGP was the system i chose, knowing my ex, can hack into peoples pc's. It took him 5 hrs to get into my account with PGP on it. Just thought id mention this. It will protect you from the IT person who's doing you a favour by maintaining your pc. But for someone who has a bit of savvy, its useless.

I had the opposite happen. When i got a new computer there was already a porn site in favorites LOL.

Maybe but, a couple of months, or so, ago, a local priest was arrested after taking his computer into a repair shop. The technician working on the computer found child pornography on the computer. I'm not remembering all the facts and whether of not there were pictures of the priest, himself, with children but, the authorities were searching for children who might have been victims. (When the priest was arrested he told reporters, "My father is elderly and ill. This is going to kill him." This is an intelligent, well educated and, until that time, well respected man.

My point being, whatever the reason, ignorance, arrogance or something else, criminals do leave incriminating material on their computers. While I strongly support the right to privacy, I believe that, if one stores incriminating material on one's computer, and then gives a third party access to the computer, and thus the material, the privacy issues go away. The legal search and seizure issues certainly do.
