I recvd a noticed from the county that they now consider my dwelling a differnet address.  County GIS, to allign 911.

Mind you, many streets have no name- and when you ask directions you pass where something "used to be"

Here is the question. do i queitly say ok?

or do I have it wrote into my lease?   old addy and new. This could explain why UPS made a mistake.  I do recieve alot of mail- that comes any number of ways. These guys can find me. [the way it is now]

Im not sure what GIS is and if it means a rats azz.

I should add my place is up for sale and I wonder if a diff address voids my lease which goes till october.

?? help.

A mess!  I called them. Apparantly Harrisburg has decided to delete all 1/2 and "rear" addresses.  So now i will have to explain that I did not move- that the govt moved my house.  Dont forget all teh documents that come with living. Driver license ins, etc etc. aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Where I lived in Florida, they recently switched from rural route numbers to more precise 911 address so it's easier to figure out where places are in the case of emergencies. Most places understand that if you tell them and the post office should still send mail to both addresses for up to a year before giving notice that they're only going to be accepting the new system from a certain date on.

At least, that's how our transition went. YMMV

Progress pahunkboy, progress... it's inevitable and unavoidable. You want to talk about confusion, when I was in Nepal (Kathmandu) there were no addresses at all, no street names nor house numbers. Talk about trying to find a needle in a haystack!!!! 5000 houses in a small area with absolutely no locational system. They just started to install the metric system in about year 2000.

My glorious country defeated evil Nepal by two year.  It was difficult for implement because all prostitute are now registers by new address system.  Our bureaucracy is not easily handle such paperworks.

GIS stands for Geographical Information Systems.

What they are likely doing is not only assigning different street addresses, they are taking GPS reading of all the street, fire hydrants, and other public service things for combination into a single county or city wide computer database.

A full GIS system can be a database of any information related to locations: tax records, water and electric facilities locations (including individual poles and transformers, water switches and mains), real estate and sub-division plats, economic activity (where all business are located by type), population overlays, radio system locations and coverage, terrain contours, stream locations, water type and depth, locations of crimes, and the value of property ... the list is endless ... all tied down and located with precise GPS locations.

While some cities, counties and states have complete systems, many do not, and there has been a Federal Government program to encourage and implement such systems for about 10 years.

Often the E911 center, as it upgrades, especially for geo-location of cell phones, usually has to pay to have consultants go out and do physical GPS location reading of all the roads and such, and that becomes the core of the database.

Another interesting thing is that there is no "standard" to assign an "official" address for a house in most places, although it is becoming more common as 911 systems have been implemented throughout the US.

Because of legal issues, the US Postal Service has refused to be the entity to assign an address (which is why, when a E911 center is implemented, they often change Rural Route addresses to something else).  The phone company won't assign an address, and if you've ever tried to get phone service somewhere, they'll often refuse to install it until you've received and "official E911" address from the city, county or other designated government agency.  The phone company's official database, relating addresses to phone numbers, is the one that gets displayed at a 911 center, but the phone company doesn't want to be responsible for any legal issues of a "wrong address", either.

In the past, a private contractor would build a road in a sub-division or a house along a road, and just give the road a name, and a house a number, and the city would accept that.  The result was a lot of duplicative street names, and house numbers that didn't make any sense, and emergency services personnel would get confused, or lost.

If it was a life or death situation, and the ambulance, for example, took an extra half hour to get across town to the "correct" Smith Avenue from the Smith Street that they actually went to - and someone died - lawsuit.

There's some pretty neat stuff you can do with a GIS system. If you ever get a chance to see, or play with one, I'd highly recommend it.

Very informative Firm!  :-)

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html    <-- this free program I have used - it is interesting- before looking at a property I can size up what is around it.

adress labels- checks- driver license, insurance, lease, utilies- i moved with out going anywhere. also- im looking to buy a home in the next 2 years- so a mortgage will assume i moved- thus loosing points- another thing to explain.

i dont want to be deleted. we have an odd tax here- i know a few ppl that were assessed this tax via both adresses- and it is pass the buck time.

a new owner could be advesarial- and an incorrect addresss perhaps could void the lease. who knows. .....agh

As it is cops have goofed kicking in the wrong door- so if im on the grid- my thoughts are it should be accurate. a few months ago- the cops here arrested the wrong man who had the same name. the guy sued and won 4k. no trial- the lawyers paid him to go away- which was why he shot for a low amount...

The post office has changed my address on my mailbox, that is five miles away down on the highway keeping company with all the other mailboxes, four times in the past ten years.  Lucky for me this is a pretty rural place and the contract carrier knows most everyone by name so I still get my mail.

What do you mean?  The credit check will show that you moved?  I'm not sure that is true.  You write down the addresses of your past residences.  I would write down the current address with the total amount of time.  You didn't physically move; your address changed because of 911, there is a difference.

Hi Katy- the kicker is the logic of the new number doesnt make sense.  BTW- somehow the credit burueas had 11-15 different spellings of my name or address.

I asked them to report my LEGAL name and addy. So now it is down to 3-6 versions of teh same  data.

This brought to mind the smile that always comes to me, somewhere on the way to Rehoboth, when I pass a sign for Gay Street and imagine the residents getting notices that they now live on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Street.
