Hi all.

Being that I love nonfiction- I thought I would peak into Evelynn Woods way.
I orderred a book- video and audio tape, in an attempt to grasp her technique.

Has anyone taken her course or a simmilliar course?

Did you find it helpful?

What are your thoughts on the conclusion that one can comprehand faster- via whatever techniques ???????

Good-bad ugly- spill it. please.

I absolutely love to read and don't think i want teaching to comprehend waht i'm reading quicker. There is nothing i like more than a candle lit bath, a glass of wine and a good book. I spend hours in there. If you enjoy the way you read - why change it?

I took it but I naturally absorb books and that technique actually slowed me down. The instructor wasn't happy with me when I said that in class... lol

When I got out of the service I went to school on the GI bill and was lucky enough to be assigned a counselor who suggested that instead of just jumping into academia that instead I might take some classes that would make going to college much easier.  Typing, shorthand, speed reading and library research.
My reading speed starting out was between three and four hundred words per minute with about 90% comprehension.  By the end of the semester  I was reading 2000 wpm with 99% comprehension in non fiction and somewhat faster in fiction.  The basic techniques are quite simple the rest is just practice.  In retrospect that first semester set me up so that college was a breeze.  I think you will not only have a good time learning but the dividends last a lifetime.

The speed-reading course I took was not Evelyn Wood's, but was really helpful to me.  It was not so much technique-based, rather based on attitude and purpose and approach to the reading.  That is, for readings that are more enjoyable to savor slowly over a glass of wine, then do it that way;  for other readings, when speed is necessary or desirable, then try to comprehend as much as you can while "reading" (in the sense of seeing and sub-vocalizing every word) as LITTLE as you can.

The extreme case is that we were given the title of a Reader's Digest article, then were NOT allowed any time to read it, then were given a test of comprehension.  Because of the kind of article that you KNOW is in Reader's Digest, and the kind of problem, then solution, then good fuzzy feeling pattern that many or most Reader's Digest articles have, all the class needed to know was the article's title and the fact that it came from Reader's Digest for most of us to pass the comprehension test (not perfectly, but good enough).  That was a pretty dramatic demonstration, I thought, of the point of speed reading:  read with your brain, and not your eyes or your voice.

So, if that's what the Evelyn Wood course sounds like it's going to teach, then it would probably be a good thing.  Hope this helps.
