For most people, absolutely.

This is indeed true for the vast majority of people I have met.

I honestly don't know.

Sometimes I think I fear more what I already know, cause I can predict how bad it will be.

There are LOTS of things i don't understand that i'm not afraid of. i just don't "get" them. Navel rings, for example.

yes I agree with it . There are only two emotions that govern everything we do love and fear.  Fear being the stronger emotion keeps us in jobs , relationships etc that we hate or know is not good for us but we are familar with it and the fear of letting go in search of something better keeps us in one place. I think everyone should read who moved my cheese and the 7 habits of highly effective people. just my humble opinion

I guess I go along with the group.  It does seem that I am most afraid of the unknown.  Of course, once it is known, I often wonder why I was afraid.

I dunno. I understand spiders pretty well. I know they are neccessary and useful and not actually evil and out to get me personally. But I am still terrified of them.

I do not agree, but that is based on myself and not others.   There are lots of things I do not "understand" but I do not fear them.  There are also things I do understand and fear because I understand them and understand the potential for danger, disaster or just plain unpleasantness.  But I am a constantly curious person.  If there is a box with a hole and someone dares me to put my hand inside, I will because I would rather know what is in it.  It might be a deadly snake or it might be a Hersey's Kiss!  I would rather risk the snake than miss the kiss!  OTOH,  I know what fire can do and it is one of my greatest fears (yes, this from a fireplay fanatic).

Well, it's often true; after all, it's so widely recognized as to be a Latin proverb, "Damnant quod non intellegunt."  (Hey, anyone know the source, by the way?  I don't.)

But it's not ALWAYS true.  I mean, I don't understand Circassian, but I'm not afraid of Circassian.

yes it's true because they lack the tolerance to understand yet expect others to conform to things deemed as "normal".

however what is considered "normal" these days?

Depends on the context I would say.

I don’t understand lawyers but I’m not scared of them
Once upon a time I didn’t understand rainbows but I was never scared of them.

Ask someone what they are most afraid of and it will be something we all completely understand. So I suppose the answer is: people aren’t scared of what they don’t understand but are instead shocked by it or uncomfortable with it.

Fear and loathing it’s wrong to confuse the two.

Yes I agree the statement to be true, though it does depend on what we're talking about...   M

I agree with that for the most part, but it is not universally true

All my searches turn up anonymity, although a guy named Bob Patrick says he read it in Quintillian.  http://www.righthandpointing.com/latin/?p=55
