Anyone else throw away those God aweful holiday fruitcakes given to us as gifts ? I tried both the regular and dark fruit cake and they make me wanna gag, anyone actually enjoy the taste of them? Merry Christmas but give me a piece of cheesecake instead

My father really loves a good traditional fruit cake. I make them for him and they are ALOT of work. You have to start by soaking the fruits in rum for 6 weeks. Then you make the batter and make the cakes. You wrap them in foil and seal them in a tin container with a tight fitting lid. Every 3rd day for the next 3 months you open them and spoon rum over the top and seal them back up. I don't think they are much like the ones you buy at the store though.

(He's also really into homemade mincemeat and plum pudding....which are very time consuming also.)

I love Panetoni It is an Italian Christmas Fruit Cake that you can buy at the store. But I don't like American Fruit Cakes. I think it comes from eating way to many in C-rations. LOL

Fruitcakes when made well are incredbly yummy, actually ... just too many of them are made badly. Krissi, next time someone sends you a bad one, why don't you try soaking it in rum for 6 weeks? 8)

My mom made two fruit cakes for the holidays. No rum in them though. sigh. I do not like fruit cakes, although I would definitely enjoy Erin's spooned rum fruit cake.

I love fruit cake, but anything you buy from a store should not be classified as fruit cake. Or hell, even a food product at all. Gross.

Hate American fruitcake......LOVE English fruitcake, especially served with a nice white stilton cheese. Ours are the ones with the rum or brandy...but I like to let the Americans think all fruitcakes are equal so there's more for me :)

One thing I noticed shopping at the grocery store yesterday: fig cake is fucking EXPENSIVE! I saw a little display of shrink-wrapped fig cake slices as I was walking past and thought to myself, oh, that's nice, let's buy a slice. $5 takes it away. Are you fucking kidding? I can get a slice of some GOOD cake for $5 at a nice cafe. With a bouncy-titted waitress who'll do anything for a tip. Buh bye!

This brought back some memories, erin.

I was going to answer the thread by saying that most people really don't know what a good homemade fruitcake tastes like.

My father used to make fruitcake when I was a kid. And it was a similiar thing to what you describe...I remember him opening the tin it was stored in and adding rum periodically, it was like a baby he was taking care of. Adding the rum, wrapping it, storing it etc.
It is quite a project, but worth it. It was dark and heavy and just a little bit sticky and so flavorful. It would last for like a year. Its like it never went bad. We would just open it up and take a thin slice now and again. The store-bought fruit cakes dont even compare. But to answer the OP, I still like them, but not as much as homemade.

I would give homemade fruit cake a chance...most times, when we pick up something in the store it's not nearly as good as the homemade thing..I know for a fact I can make a southern pecan cheesecake a thousand times better than anything in the store..

I think most fruitcake (with the exception of the nice-sounding ones above) should be turned into some sort of weaponry. Bricks for housing units perhaps?

Well, I do loooooooove cheesecake, but I do enjoy fruitcake also. Not every brand, but there are some good ones out there.

There are these monks that make them, and someday I am getting one of those...yummy..

Yep, there is a monatery nearby who makes them every year. Have to order them well in advance.

I have yet to taste any fruitcake I didn't spit out. This includes a few versions of homemade fruitcake. However, I am open to sampling more versions in coming years to see if I ever find one I like in this lifetime.

I got a bourbon fruitcake again this year, which I actually managed to give away. My aunt sends me the same thing every year. I tasted it the first time and ended up spitting it out because it tasted so awful, so I try to find someone who will take it to avoid the guilt of throwing out food. If I would not have found someone to take it, though, it would have wound up in the trash.
