(Recent study) What Wealthy Women Want in a Man:It's conventional wisdom--backed up by numerous scientific studies--that women want a man with money, while men want a woman with looks. What happens to this age-old equation when women become independent and wealthy and don't need a man for financial security?
Their preferences change, that's what. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for a role reversal that could upend the world of dating. As women become more financially independent so does their preference for physical attractiveness in potential partners, New Scientist reports of research from the school of psychology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
Led by Fhionna Moore, the St. Andrews team gave questionnaires online to 1,851 heterosexual women between the ages of 18 and 35 who were single, in relationships and married. They found that as women became more financially secure and independent, their preference for physical attractiveness in potential partners also increased. When women had lower levels of control over their money, they tended to rate a man's financial status as a more important quality than his looks. With more women working and many in high-level, well-paid positions, constraints that were typical 50 years ago have disappeared. "It is this change in comparison to historical constraints that I believe influences mate preferences," Moore told New Scientist.
There is one other intriguing conclusion from this study: The more ambitious a woman, the more likely she is to look for a mate who is younger than she. The study has been published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior.
