AGORANTE -> Seasons Greetings (12/24/2006 2:49:04 PM)

Christianity adapted the pagan Roman mid winter holiday of Saturnalia and called it Christmas.

All human cultures from at least the Neolithic Age have celebrated the Winter Solstice.  Early argiculturalists (peasants) watched throughout the fall as the days got shorter and shorter.  To people who depended on the Sun for light and life this was alarming. Furthermore shorter days bring the mental state known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - a kind of depression.

Then come the solstice - the day after which the days will start to get longer. Its time to party! Most ancient religions had a priesthood who watched the skies and could predict important dates like the solstice.

What has all this got do do with BDSM? You may ask. Actually quite a bit. The feast of Saturnalia took place in the context of a slave society. For the feast day(s) the masters and the slaves swiched roles. The slaves would loll about on the cushions and the Master would fetch the wine and peal the grapes. So you kinksters out there this is the season for you to SWITCH!

Christmas (or rather Saturnalia) is my second favorite pagan holiday. My favorite is St. Valentines Day when the young boys and men killed a goat, flayed the hide and used to make whips. They then ran through the streets and beat the young girls. Something like this (except with willow branches) is still practiced in Eastern Europe around Easter.

Interesting... Too bad my dominant and I are spending the holiday apart.

Whatever it is you're celebrating, enjoy it.

Best wishes, all.

I would like to second this. No matter what one may call the holiday season; I wish you the best in it.

Well, since we're getting technical...the days get longer after the December Solstice..in the NORTHERN Hemisphere (this is the winter solstice for us). In the SH, the days are now starting to get shorter (this is the summer solstice for them). The days will begin to get longer for the SH after their winter solstice, which is in June. The seasons are opposite for the NH and SH.

What does this have to do with BDSM? Hmmm...well, probably nothing, but it's my birthday and I'm allowed to be as picky as I want!

Ah -
I have read this before - and, it is stated with such conviction even through the solstice and the celebration of Saturnalia do not occur on the same day - and, they do not occur on the same day as Christmas.

I mean - why not state that the "New Year" was absconded by Christianity"?
Or, that Chanauka was usurped by the Noveau Hebrews while the church was being set up in Rome?
Or that if it "was done" -that it was the Romans that transfered the holiday (as is most likely) rather than the church?

- I would like to see some sort of proof that this is not coincindence and/or simply rationalizing on- a decree banning Saturnalia -and- adopting Christmas -or- find me a Saturnalian (someone who worships that ancient Roman demi-God to question!! They hide when they post such things!)

This whole thing is too secretive to me... I think it is a consipiracy.
