It should be up to the individual.

As long as the individual is the only one affected, yes. But on the road, seatbelts don't only protect the wearer, they protect everyone else on the road by keeping drivers in their place and preventing minor collisions from escalating.

If you go on the road with faulty breaks, bald tires, loose steering, drunk - you are negligent. If you don't take all reasonable precautions to assure that you are fit to drive or that your vehicle is safe, then you are being negligent.

Wearing a seatbelt is a reasonable requirement that significantly improves safety and survivability for everyone, not just the one wearing it. Operating a vehicle without one is, therefore, negligent.

what about the people who are decapitated (hope i spelled that right) by seat belts..?

If you're going fast enough to get decapitated by your seat belt you would not have survived as a free agent anyway.

Seatbelts aren't a guarantee but on average they greatly improve your overall safety, save lives and reduce injuries. What's not to love about that?

First of all, I do not think this thread is random stupidity[;)]

I would wear a seat belt whether it was the law or not most likely because it makes sense to. Do I feel it should be mandatory for adults? I could argue this either way....

On the one hand the pro seat belt proponents:
1) Driving is a privilege and not a right

2) Insurance rates may go up if we went back to no seat belt laws.

3) rescue people that go to the scene of accidents have an easier time finding people that wear seat belts, they have an easier time emotionally coping when they respond and people are still living, and yes I think this is important in the equation.

4) There is a cost to tax payers in more than one way... Social security payments to surviving kids, cost of unisured motorists and their medical care. It is well known that people who wear seats belts survive accidents more than those who do not.

Con of seat belt laws:
1) We should be able to gamble with our lives if we feel like it.
2) In rare freak incidences people are killed by seat belts

I am now convinced that i should wear my seatbelt at all times, thankyou for all the replies...but I STILL don't think they should put a warrant out for my arrest because i didn't pay the stupid fine...geesh...i am gonna go pay it this week just to avoid the hassle....i don't think i'd do too well in jail..[&:]

I totally forgot that about 2 months ago I got a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt, and I was only a passenger in a car...I feel it should be MY decision whether or not to wear a seatbelt, after all--it's MY life, right? As far as children are concerned, they should have to be wearing seat belts at all times...The ticket was like $45.00 of course I ignored it...then forgot about it lol...now I got a warrant out for my arrest unless i pay $80.00 so I guess it's time I give the state of New Jersey their Christmas gift.....seatbelts, do you think it should be YOUR decision whether or not to wear them?

Krissy I am 100% of you!   wearing a seat belt doesnt have any effect in my driving ability or technique...as a matter of a fact in my case it impedes my driving...i stand in at 4-9  not a seat belt in the world fit me correctly add that to the discomfrt from having a double mastectomy and reconstruction well it hurts...for the first time in the lasy 13 years i couldnt get out of a ticket for the seat belt thing...i was drinving a friend to work in a local village township thingy and got pulled over for not wearinga seat belt $100 click it or ticket...so i have to pay the 100 at least he didnt bust my chops abotu my tinnted windows...NY state changed the % of tint that is allowed and now the tint on my windows that came with the car 8 years ago suddenly  arent okay...

I think that kids haveing to be buckled absolutely not an issue at all..its a childrens safety thing....but a an adult a personal choice...i know for a fac tthat the last time i wore my seat belt i got truly injured...i was invoeld in a car wreck 3 years ago...and becasue of the way that seat belts do not fit me i recieved a few ruptred discs...was the car a wreck yes?  but well the doctor told em the only reason i ended up hurt the way i was was due tot he fact that the seat belt doesnt fit me properly...so now becasue of a seat belt i was injured...hmmm i would love to be able to get the state to cover that issue...but well i suppose if i drove like a nit and was involved in a car accidetn that the truck i was in rolled then yes the seat belt would have prevented a worse injury then the one i ended up in....but due to teh fact that my accident involved a tire blowing out and the truck careening in a circle and just goign i a c acircle and then the sudden stop....my spine was held in place at the waist level and there it stpped...if i was restrained at the hip then i would not have gotten injured in that area...i would have slid across the seat with my lap top comuter and mu nursing bag....and come back....but instaead i was heald still and git jerked and ruptured 2 discs..the third is just hernitated.  i astually didnt lose a file out of my box of files...everything stayed in the littel travel file box and all..i just got hurt!

so as far as Im concerned set my people free in the drivers seat!  as far as Im concerned i will gladly pay the passenger ticket as well...as ana dult it doesnt effect my way of sitting in a seat and my behavior....so if i feel that i should be restrained becasue of the driving ability of the driver then I shouldnt be in that vehicle...i do not object the passegers in my truck nuckling up...not at all...I feelt hat every adult has their own choice...but every kids is buckled up...i feelt hat kids need that gentle reminder to behave!

i believe it should be up to the individual. i own one car that has never even had seatbelts installed in it (a 1963 model). i also ride motorcycles (i do wear a helmet, by choice). It's not the .gov's job to be my mother, father, or wetnurse. FWIW, i believe that our society could do just fine if we reduced the number of laws on the books by 2/3rds or so.

Good luck finding yourself a nice sadistic warden [:)]

...dave

I sooo miss my 65 Galaxy for that very reason!  althoguh it came with seat belts...the seat belts wer only long enough to click ontot hemselves you couldnt actually wear them and they were only lap belts!  so even if technically i had to get a extender i wouldnt have to deal with the neck choking thingy.....
