When phoning, do Y/you announce Y/yourself? "Hi, it's Joe/Jo." Or do Y/you say "Hi, it's me"?

I can scarcely identify my unmentionable's voice from three syllables, and wanted to put in a good word for those who identify T/themselves.

I don't and I should cuz I don't recognize others' voices either all the time.

I use to announce my self, but with Caller ID, the person picking up will answer "Hi Clint."

On my cellphone I say "Hello" in a singsong "welcome to my phone" sort of voice.

And I only say it twice, after that I hang up. I get so annoyed at people who shout or say hello like 8 times.

If someone wants someone and can't recognize the voice they should go "Hi, is Sam there?" and you can go "This is Sam" or "Sure hold on" or "Sorry, can I leave a message?"

I might not want to identify myself right away frankly- they are calling ME, they can ask for who they want directly.

What peeves me off is when someone asks WHERE the person are and WHEN they will be back if they aren't available. In a family with a lot of alcoholic history, we were taught seriously that it's no one's business unless the person has specifically told you to tell someone otherwise. They aren't there- I'll leave a message and that's it.

When my best friend calls up and I see him on the caller ID I pick up and say "Ahhh shit, what now?
"Hey Dickhead" he will say invariably.
"Fah-Q" is my standard response.

Why I so enjoy these little greetings I'm unsure. Maybe its because I utterly despise pleasantries, and being free to speak thus seems a lot more real to me than "Hello my friend, how are you?"

When anybody says something like that to me I find it somewhat annoying, say if I see them every day at work or something, as I know damn well they don't really give a damn how I b, and were I to start discussing how I'm not feeling so good or something, they'd quickly make excuses and get the hell away from me as fast as they could. So if they make the mistake of doing a daily "how are you?" routine with me, they get my standard reply for that:
"Halfway-shitty"
"Oh, whats wrong then?" they'll generally say, feigning compassion.
"Oh nothin", I retort, "thats just my smartass little sarcastic way of sayin I'm ok, dumbass"
So much for their frickin pleasantries...lol.
I know I'm quirky, and it doesn't sit well with some. Like other little rituals in life I can't abide have caused problems and misunderstandings. Shaking hands for instance. I'll go thru the motions with that one maybe 3 times if youre lucky, then we have to dance, and not in a good way.
but thats a whole other story....lol.

That's where the notion of social closeness comes in.

Naming people, or using non-standard social greetings, is really par for the course with people you have come to know over time, become close with and formed new social greeting rituals.

With strangers and people you have no social closeness with, it's much better to stick with the generic standard rituals.

I only have a cell-phone, so I just answer it 'Hel-OH?'.... (second) 'He-LO-oh'....Hang up.

For me, the expectation falls on the caller to identify themself. I wouldn't want my UMs to tell strangers their names on the street - my phone would be no different. At work, though, I resort to how I was told in the Marines: 'Thank you for calling XXXXX this is Steve speaking, how may I help you?'

Not very Domly, is it.

Until you asked the question, I wasn't conscious how I answered or announced myself, when out of the office. In the office, I always announce my name when taking a call.. but at home, I just pick up the phone and say hi. Whem making a call, when the other person answers, I just say hi and launch into a conversation. Never found it a problem with friends, but with family it can cause fun as my dad, brother and uncles voices all sound very similar to mine on the phone, and none of us announce ourselves! ( mind you, my mums been mixing up my name with my brothers and uncles for 40 years, so it doesnt erally matter who shes speaking to!)

It depends... if it's one of my kids calling I usually answer the phone "Joe's Pizza"!! Well, two of my kids anyway... my oldest is the epitome of an airhead... she actually once said "Sorry, wrong number" and hung up when I did that.

It depends who I'm calling. If it's family or my closest friends, I always count on them to recognize my voice (or at least my phone number). At work, even though we all have caller ID, I almost always give my name, unless they answer, "Hey, Jessica" or some variant. For most other calls, I will identify myself, unless I'm being secretive intentionally.

And when I answer a call, unless it's my work phone and I can tell it's an outside line calling, I never bother to answer with my name. Depending on who's calling, I could answer, "Hello," "Hi," "hey," "What's up?", "Hola," "Buon giorno," "What do you want?", "Yo" or a million other ways. And thanks to caller ID, with friends, family and colleagues, I'll usually tack their name onto my greeting.

It depends on who I am calling, if it is my son or my mom or my Daddy, I do not announce who I am... they tend to never get confused about it. I have a distinctive voice though.
