There is evidence to support both he died of cpmplications of a fall.  Also evidence to support it was a lifetime of unhealthy eating.

No autopsy was performed because the family declined it.  We will never know the truth...beyond that of our own research.

Actually, a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that there was not evidence that a low carb diet over several years increased the risk of heart disease in women:

I've definitely expereinced the withdrawl symptoms many have described, and yes, there is a rapid weight loss (referring to Atkins).  I would caution that if you go off the low-carbs, you might rebound by putting on weight very quickly.  If the loss of carbs from your diet is too much, you might consider looking at a way of eating that focuses on the glycemic index, which categorizes foods based on how they react in the body as far as insulin release.  It allows carbs, but encourages more whole wheat and grains.

Best of luck to you!

Another diet to try is the 6 Week Body MakeOver http://www.6wbmo.com

I find it easier to stay on as it is foods that I normally eat including potatoes and  rice.  No dairy though :(  You eat every 2.5-3 hours so you really don't get hungry and if you do, then you know it's not that long before you can eat again.

juliaoceania -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/28/2006 8:14:23 PM)

My main reason for starting South Beach was to stop the process of insulin resistence that I see happening to me as I approach 40. It is not so much about weight, I am not obese or anything like that, and I get plenty of exercise, it is about energy. I have highs and lows in my energy that I know are related to what I am eating. Potato and rice are both starches that turn to instant energy in your blood stream, they are also quickly stored as fat. Sweet potatoes are allowed on South Beach once in a while once the first two weeks are over.

Feel free to email me julia.  I have followed the South Beach plan for 3 years now. It's a way of life not a diet for me and most of the people i know that follow it. It is not "low carb".  Even in the 2 weeks of phase 1 beans are highly recommended and can help stave off some of the less pleasant effects of phase 1. Be sure to eat at least 4 1/2 cups of veggies daily, which are also carbs.  The sugar withdrawal effects will pass after about the 4th day and you should feel better. After phase 1 you will be able to add back in up to 3 servings of both whole grains and fruit. Phase 1 really does work to rid you of sweet and starch cravings.

I belong to the SB message board on aol and everyone there is very friendly and supportive. I can send you a link to it if you want. I know I couldn't of made it this long without their support. We also share a lot of great recipes. I can also send you some of my favorite phase 1 recipes. I'll post one of them here, these are delicious:

Black Bean Brownies

1 15 oz  can of black beans - drained and rinsed
4 eggs
3/4 cup splenda
4T. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 t. baking powder
2 T. oil
1 T. vanilla
1/2 c. nonfat dry powdered milk
1/2 t. baking soda
1/4 c. low fat ricotta cheese (for moister cupcakes)
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Mix all ingredients in food processor or mix very well.  Divide evenly in cupcake pan (I use cupcake papers in pan.  But make sure that you spray with Pam.  These stick as their isn't much fat.)
Bake for 20-30 minutes, till toothpick pulls out clean.

This is a good phase 1 treat.  They are good warm with peanut butter on top or cold with fat free cool whip.

This is exactly what South Beach does. The purpose of SB eating is to keep your blood sugar even throughout the day.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/28/2006 8:56:26 PM)

My faves on SB were guacamole, salmon, french onion soup, and sunflower nuts.

Thanks a lot proudsub, and I emailed you on the other side.

juliaoceania -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (1/3/2007 4:57:01 PM)

For those who are interested in if South Beach works, I have lost two pants sizes in the last 9 days. I am unbelievably impressed with how fast it has went, and should be back in my loose size 10s in 2 more weeks or so.

It has been hard to cut out all flour products and sugar, but well worth it.

Level -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (1/3/2007 5:06:14 PM)

Good job with the diet, julia, keep it up. I've gone kinda radical on my diet, I'm only eating lean meat, veggies, and more veggies [:)]. I'm hoping I can get off my meds once I get my weight where it needs to be, and I'm working towards an hour of cardio every day. "Ugh!", indeed lol.

juliaoceania -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (1/3/2007 5:13:50 PM)

Good one on you Level! That sounds sorta like the way I am eating. I am a serious carb addict, and I have been tired for the last several days, but that is supposed to change about two weeks into it. Maybe if I continue to eat this way I will not need medication, that is the hope.

Atkins died of the Atkins diet...they released that I believe last year.

Um, no.  He died of a fall, and subsequent complications including an infection.  He was observed in good health and good shape delivering a lecture to cardiologists a few weeks before his death.

Short term...great success but long term death.

Bull puckey.  If you do Atkins as written, not as the popular media imagines it with a pound of butter wrapped in bacon for breakfast every morning, you will end up on Maintenance phase eating a lot of vegetables, some whole grains and fruit, and reasonable portions of meat, eggs and dairy.  Sugar and white flour are eliminated but whole grains are encouraged in moderate portions.

My everyday meals consist of a big portion of salad or steamed veggies plus some meat.  Nuts are a good snack, a bit of fruit is a fine dessert, and I also supplement with protein shakes and "green magma" drinks.  I don't touch sugar or white flour.  Not a big fan of butter, I prefer olive oil.  I get plenty of exercise.  I'll eat a small sweet potato or a handful of raw oats sprinkled on yogurt for healthy pre-workout fuel carbs, and enjoy a piece of whole grain bread afterward.  This is a healthy diet, and more to the point, it's closer to what our ancestors originally evolved to eat than the nasty processed white flour and sugar crap we stuff our faces sick with today.

I rerally don't recommend making bold statements of fact like "Atkins = long term death" in the absence of any facts whatsoever to back it up.  It's simply not true.

I'm a neophyte on both diets beyond reading their respective books.
Never tried either, just read about them.

Didn't read very far or very carefully, did you?

Both of those books are written for laypeople and are not particularly clear on the science end, so I recommend reading up on the mechanisms of ketogenic diets if you're interested in the hard facts.  Duchaine and McDonald are a better bet for explaining how they work.

julia, how's the diet going? Doing well here, the weight is steadily dropping, and I've had my main med halved and am maintaining blood sugars in the 90s. By jove, I think it works! [:D]

LeMis -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (1/14/2007 7:55:58 PM)

Some people I know stay away from the "white" carbs, like white bread, white potatoes, white rice, white flour...
they chose brown rice, sweet potatoe and whole grain bread.  Some of these people are diabetics, some just want to eat healthier and others want to lose weight/clothing sizes.

Best of luck Julia.  Keep us all updated please.

I am starting to get over my carb addiction. I have allowed myself on to phase two a couple of days ago because I stopped craving bad things. Weight wise, it is not going off as fast as it was, BUT I have enough energy to start exercising again, so once I get out there and start moving, the weight should melt off. I do not know how much I lost, but my belly is pretty much flat, which is what the diet promised[:)]. I am using visualization also.

I am so happy to hear your blood chemistry is on its way! I was getting highs and lows based on what I was eating, it is the entire reason I chose this avenue instead of another.

That's very awesome!

Thus far I've only dropped 7 pounds and have two days left on stage one.  But I really do feel the energy flow going all day now rather than always needing another pick-me-up, and the steady progress is better for my long term goals.

proudsub -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (1/14/2007 8:50:15 PM)

Sounds like you are doing great julia, keep it up!!  Here's another recipe for you, one of my favorite snacks or desserts:

Pink ricotta creme (sort of like instant cheese cake)

Mix together:
1/2 C low fat or fat free ricotta cheese
1/4-1/2 tsp Crystal Lite pink lemonade powder
2 Tbls fat free Cool Whip

In phases 2 and 3 you can top with berries, yummy

What I find having been on a low carb diet for several years is that the thought of eating a donut seems like it might be nice, but then I remember how horrible it will be when I go through the lovely insulin crash an hour later.

So I put the donut down and eat some almonds instead.
