As someone who works with at-risk adolescents as a career, I'd have to say that lack of parental influence probably at least contributes a little bit, yes. A lot of our kids come in with all sorts of alternative views, lifestyles, etc. (Granted, some of them are just going through phases and won't maintain thier involvement.) But I think that a lot of our kids choose alternative lifestyles and views because they see it as an alternative way to get their needs met. If their needs: physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, aren't being met inconventional ways, they will look to what society deems "unconventional" ways to get them met. This isn't to say that everyone who participates in an alternative lifestyle was neglected as a child, or even that most were. But I think that people who, throughout childhood, had to look for "alternative" ways of getting their needs met are more likely to look for alternative ways to get them met as adults.
