is a "session" solely used as a term to represent a paid activity or is it used for all activities?

just curious.

~grinning~ The only "session" I have ever partaken in has been with my therapist.  But I have seen the word used interchangeably with "scening."  I personally use neither.

i prefer not to use the word scene either, unless i'm having a discussion with someone who chooses to use it. session, i imagine, would be synonymous with scene to some. scenes or sessions, in that context, could be paid or not, public or not, etc. but, as ownedgirlie says, the only sessions i personally partake in are with my therapist ;)

For some, its used in all activities.  For pros it usually means a paid act while a scene would be a freebie with their own pets.  For me, I dislike either.  WE play, but we dont have scenes or sessions.

Michael I think pro session when I hear 'session' and playing personally (private or public) without a monetary exchange when I hear the word 'scene'...

Call it a "session;" call it a "scene;" call it "play," call it "wobbydiddlesquat," in the end, the term that works best is what works for the people engaging in the session, scene, play, wobbydiddlesquat. If someone out there receive money for doing so, then they could be considered a professional, engaging in a session, scene, play, wobbydiddlesquat.

I think the term "session" is often used to move emotionality out of the activity - right up till "sesson" takes on an emotional and intimate tone of its own...and then you might as well call it a wobbydiddlesquat for all that it matters.

We use the term session. It just fits us better than scene or play or wobbydiddlesquat. And neither of us are pros.

I've always assumed that "session" comes from the prodomme world.

"Session" is a term my Dom uses. For us it means we are getting together for either new training or reenforcement of what I've already learned. There is not plot; just him directing what happens. No money involved. ;)

Be well,

I always assumed it to mean any defined space of time where BDSM activity is being performed. It would be interchangeable with scene and play I suppose.

I've always used he term 'session' to refer to a scene.

I am not a Pro.

It's what I learned from the start, and I'll probably always refer to a BDSM related play time in My day as 'a session'.

I've never been pro, but I apprenticed to a Pro Domina, so perhaps the comments from Jasmyn et al are worth noting.

The BDSM circles I grew up in, however,  always used 'session' to clarify that a BDSM activity was certainly different from, say, a 'date'.....  "I have a 'session' planned with Ms Whipster on Saturday" made it clear that Ms Whipster was indeed sessioning the sub, not going to dinner and a movie. (Although I suppose the session could have included the sub being bound and leashed for dinner and a movie, the word 'session' indicated the BDSM element that would be in play).

To each their own.

Perhaps but then did you really listen to the therapist or just hear what you wanted to hear.

I use it for a specific set aside period of time to engage in the more formal BD or SM activities as opposed to the daily Ds flow of my everyday life. I'd also call this "doing a scene".

I always considered it a professional thing.

I use "scene" or "play" when I mean purely because I need/want to.

You know I have seen so many posts asking what does "x" mean. The answers always seem to be the same, "to mean x means this" or "call it whatever you want". The BDSM community seems to be varied in not only personal tastes but on their own definitions of what it means. I applaud this.

I have always used "play" on the vanilla side to mean having sex.  Now when I see it used for bdsm activities, I get confused.
Since "play" or scening or sessioning = spanking or bondage, etc. that don't necessarily culminate in sexual activities, is there another termed used to mean "First I'm going to spank you and then I'm going to fxxx you"?

In our world, that IS a session. It's also the mainstay of our sex life.

I was taught that a session is when you are going to learn something new from your Master/ Domme or reach new heights on some play that you have experienced together but with new limits.

I was taught that a scene is where you are role playing or Master/ Domme has set up a scene for your limits to be tested (eg. as in if you have never been tested in jealousy, you will be required to watch or you don't share yourself well with others, may be required to be the center of a gang bang, etc.)

In my training there was a definite difference.  Play was just for his pleasure or mine.
