This is what I am considering emailing them, it is pretty self explanitory if you read it through.

It is shorter than some of my posts...............

Dear friends at onrebate.com;

Be notified of this. When we bought this computer system we had several rebates coming. I have signed bothe checks, and at the reciept of your email, immediately informed the person who does my bank running of the situation, but I do remember signing two checks.

Under Ohio Law, the UCC and other statutes, and federal postal regulations, you have now sent me a bone fide check, unsolicited. It therefore belongs to me, and as a bank instrument you must honor it. You issued it. Just because your check numbers are out of date doensn't mean a thing to me. I have just made $20, and I will fight to the ends of the Earth to get it.

You are in violation of ORC and all kinds of laws if you wrote me a check and it is no good.

Consult your legal department, they will most likely tell you to just pay it, along with any fees from my bank if you stop payment.

You may ask why I am being so nice to you, to that I will give you an answer. Because you just about spammed one of my favorite email addresses to death. I will NEVER deal with you again no matter what. I don't care if they got new Mazeratis for $120,000 with a $300,000 rebate, if the rebate comes from you, I do not want it.

Get the picture ? That means that I will be avoiding dealing with your clients like the plague. Is that good for business ? If you happen to think so, consider this. I could buy a house on my credit card, I don't need your rebates. But when buying from your clients now I shall avoid products with rebates. I have been pissed off, and when that happens I will gladly pay your competitor twice as much for the exact same product. This now applies to your client, Global Computer.

If you cost me any bank charges I swear that I will make this entire exchange public, including all the hoops you made me jump through to get MY money. I will explain how companies like you make money, by sending the rebates late unless or until there is an Attorney General's investigation. I will reveal everything, including the reason that rebates exist, which is to kill small business or anyone trying to horn in on the action. And I will do it en~masse. bigtime.

I will become a member of every forum and newsgroup I can possibly get on, crosspost in Usenet, all that. If you cost me one thin dime by sending two checks late instead of one on time, and it costs me anything, your company name will be mud. Do you understand ?

Get prepared, or if there are charges you can send me a check with the original $20, along with any bank charges to be reimbursed.

You are not playing with kids here, and I treat you good compared to what you did to me, selling my email address and spamming me. Let me tell you, it is of no use. I don't want your shit. Screw rebates, just tell me what it costs up front. You are really useless.

Now I am done. The rant is over. Show the boss, and I mean that.

He won't care.

This is where we stand now though. And if you would take me off your spam lists I would appreciate it. If you don't, I know hackers with Linux who can keep your site down for a long time. Please comply, I do not like to get mean.

You know who I am.

PS, A satisfactory response is welcome. I really do not want to start shit. Remember these are people who can do it anonymously, DO NOT cross me. Nobody is hackproof, not to Linux. Even running Linux so I am told.

I didn't spam you, nor send you two checks with the same number, why did you do it to me ? If you stop, everything will be fine.
You know who I am.

..............................

That was composed on 4-14 beers with the use of 1.2 - 4.2 cigaretted of the left hand variety.

I am not sending it right away, even though I am not incoherent in any way, I would rather sleep on something that strong. The threat is very real, it has been explained to me how it is done, and it can be done from truckstops and motels. Yes, a website really needs no enemies with this. Webmasters with Linux or whatever would figure it out, Windows people will have a very hard time with it. From what I understand, the function of which I speak is a multiple hit, or a multiple try on a website, normal is five. You change the parameter to 500 and you crash 90% of the sites you click on.

If you got people out there with used laptops running wifi at truck shops coffee houses motels, even outside of motels, in residential neighborhoods, you can be a real danger to a website with this. Of course they will adapt and respond.

I have never done this, and I won't really do it to onrebates.com. It's not really warranted. Plus it would only hurt the workers there. The suits would be fine. If you are going to suffer the carnage of destroying something, make sure the leaders are gone too, otherwise they just pop up with another company name.

They might even hire the same people without them knowing it, if all the HR staff is changed, how would they know ? How would they know it is a finite job, until they get busted ? Who knows as they sell anything over the phone or online, that the item will be shipped ? So the salesperson is not liable, but is the one the suffers. Even not charged with any crime, nor discharged for due cause, they are still out of a job. Now what ?

So the same people open another company doing the same shit and they call for a job in the paper. They get it.

But then they can say they didn't do it. That it was an automated thing, you did not check this box on the website and you are now enrolled in the spamorama. They have nothing to do with it, "Do you want to........from third parties?", and the default is yes, and the webpage is set to force like 2048 horizontal so they can put it way over to the right where you will never see it.

This is an adult site so I am going to say it. It is not Jews or Russians or Koreans or Venezuelans, it is MOTHERFUCKERS.

And I mean that in the truest sense of the word, vile, not literal. I don't mean people who fuck their Mothers, and I don't mean people who fuck Women who are already Mothers. I mean it in the purely slang way. MOTHERFUCKERS, or put another way MUTHAFUKERS.

Lookit, you can't call them stupid, you can't call them defective or all kind of shit. They are not really all that brainwashed either, possibly into one of the modern styles or two, but not all the way. They are not stupid, they are not misled, they are MOTHERFUCKERS.

They run the world and you and I have to eat their shit.

Tell ya what T.....

Battled with the rebate folks many many times. It's a gimmick..... and they will do whatever they can not to pay you--- They want you to give up. But I've learned if you just hound the hell out of them you'll eventually get paid.

I almost always get my rebate check in the end.  Sometimes it takes a while, and a couple of times I had to dispute the relevant charge through my credit-card company before I finally saw progress.  (That won't get you your money if it's a third-party rebate--for example, from the manufacturer--but it does force everyone to go through the expense of investigating your claim and responding to the credit-card company's investigation.)

I don't really understand why companies do the mail-in rebate thing, instead of just giving you the discount at the cash register, but I've noticed that certain retailers (like Staples) are trying to make the rebate process a lot easier and less fraught with mystery.  I ask myself who is offering the rebate and whether they're a reputable company, and usually I get satisfaction in the end.  I've gotten some great deals in my life through rebates.

Boy am I glad we dont really get the whole mail in rebate thing here in the UK.

I remember buying a PC package with my partner in the US and trying to figure out which rebates exluded which other rebates so we could get the maximum possible back, what with rebates for printers as part of a package, rebate for this monitor, but not that scanner it must have taken us hours to get it right, and then the nightmare of recieving the cheque in the mail and trying to work out if that 20 bucks was for buying the monitor or buying the mouse so we knew what needed chasing up later.

As for the threat to disable a computer system, I dont know about US law, but here in the UK that would be a criminal offence in its own right. With the threat being of a "pay up or else" variety I would suspect that it would be some form of extortion/blackmail which I would guess would be illegal almost anywhere in the world, so my advice would be dont send it :)

I really hope the mods pull this thread. Did you never stop to consider that you might piss of the 'hackers with linux' by implying they would do something illegal and stupid.

I know if a customer wrote me a letter like that I'd make them jump back and forth and up there own ass to get anything back. Did you try sending a simple letter of fact first? I tend to take care of customers that don't threaten me on first contact. This letter would seem appropriate on like the final straw level.

Anyway, I don't know if you already tried talking to them rationally, but your hacker buddies aren't going to scare them much and if one occurs by chance within the month or two after your letter, I'd guess you'd be a prime suspect.

It's a calculated sales ploy. They know that a certain percentage of buyers who are lured-in by the rebate are actually lacksidasical and won't go through the steps to mail it in a timely manner.

Dude, no offense, but that sounds totally unhinged. Write it off to experience and buy your computer gear from Newegg.

Thanks for the cool headed points. I almost forgot, that is a threat, and a matter of public record.

I was seriously pissed. The second check had already gone to the bank and cost $5 to "undo". Now they have cost me money. If the Mods do pull this thread good, less evidence :-).

You brought up a very interesting point LaM, being why not just give you the discount right away. A valid point, but there are other valid points that seem to predecess it.

Now I would like to start at the beginning. The reason rebated exist at all. To really understand that little part of marketing science we need to go back to coupons. Why ?

Coupons do two things, gets people into the store, and verifies the efficacy of various advertising avenues. The coupons are coded with a number, and you pour more money into the agencies or venues which get you the most results.

Now comes rebates. Why have them at all ? Even rebates at the register controls who is selling the product. That is specifically to prevent the little Man from making money.

Rebates that you mail in for also usually net them your bank account number and a bunch of other information as well. Not only does this reveal your level of wealth, but gives them demographic information to steer future ad campaigns in the right direction.

In my own dealings, I doubt I will ever buy anything with a mail in rebate again. And this one was bad ones. Not only did they spam me, they forced me to upgrade some of the software in my old beater PC, because you have to print the form. They can go fuck themselves.

But I agree, why tell them that ?

I think you should pound a few more beers, add to the letter and send it.  It will give the workers there something to print out and post near the watercooler for some serious belly laughs.

And you really don't think that pisses off said lackadaisical customers?  It hardly seems worth it for a petty discount.

In a sense, your statement is somewhat oxymoronic. Lacksidasical shoppers only care about the rebate at the moment they visualize the savings and are lured-in. So no... I don't think they care.

LaM....It’s a very aggressive, covert sales tactic, designed to specifically target the lacksidasical shopper. However they know that a certain percentage of shoppers are like you and I, who want their rebate and are willing to pursue it. Then after that ….they’ve even calculated for a percentage of aggressive shoppers to give up after a certain level of persistence.
It’s just a game….and if you want the rebate you have to play it. But I agree with you….it’s very unethical, and in a way might even be construed as a form of false advertising.

For the record… I purchase stuff that is advertised with rebates all the time and have never been skunked. But then I know how to write a good letter and talk to the folks that work the liaison department between the retailer and the manufacturer.

A month ago I purchased a 700 watt power supply for seventy bucks with a seventy dollar rebate. Same day I purchased a new Maxtor 300 gig hardrive for sixty-nine bucks and a twenty dollar rebate. I'd say you can't even get these items that cheap on e-bay, so it's actually worth it sometimes. Wouldn't you agree?

it is just like gift cards, the stores know there is a certain percentage who will never use them. Cash for them on the bottom line.

I have always gotten the rebates I sent in for with no problems. Staples prints extra receipts for that purpose. You can get really good deals by using rebates.

There are many ways to avoid spam, I am sure all of you know most of them so I won't list them here.

Here is an interesting article about what happened to a spammer Russian Spammer Dead

If you are really looking to save money install linux or another free operating system, give open office a try.

Penny wise pound foolish to try to save fifty bucks of a hardware rebate but spend hundreds on proprietary software when there are better free replacements available for download.

I won't even give you the whole hackers are good , crackers are bad speech.

I have thought this out a bit further and hindsight is telling me I did wrong.

I recieved an email from onrebates late at night. That does not mean they sent it late at night, but that is when I got it. Dad does the bank run, and I had signed the second check that night. I have a key to his house so in the wee hours of the night I went in and left a copy of the email on his kitchen table where he would see it. But it was too late, he had apparently gone the night before.

So he calls the bank and now we are out $5. A charge for undoing the transaction.

This is where I erred. We should have let the check clear and let them persue getting the money back. Why not, that is EXACTLY what they do to us.

See I told yall, I am just too nice.

Actually, I think some of these manufacturers offer rebates in order to harvest people's contact information.  The old "register to complete your warranty" tactic doesn't work anymore.

Absolutely.  As I said, I've gotten plenty of very good deals with mail-in rebates and almost always get my check in the end.  About 80-90% of the time the check arrives without any hassle.

I worked at a shop selling new TVs. The guy would tell the customer straight out, DO NOT send the warraty reg in until some time passes, perhaps even till it breaks. He would get you the most time on warranty possible.

Thing is, in Ohio it is illegal for them to require any such thing, therefore all you need is the reciept. Problem is, if you DID send in the registration, it screws this little perk up really bad. It's a bit rough when you try to put in a warranty claim on a set that was store stock eight months after it was sold.

Did y'all know that yuou are ALL going to jail except for a few ? If you ever bought a microwave oven you are required to register it with the federal government. Used to be the card was right on the box. Big fine and prison time for failing to comply.

Reason ? If I have electricity to run it, I can take a metal tube and make a weapon out of the magnetron in a microwave. If you smoke, remember to tear the tax stamp on the top before smoking any cigarettes out of that pack. And if you kiss someone in West Virginia, make sure your tongue stays in your own mouth.

Doesn't this suggest to you that we are thought of/treated as a crop, or a herd ?

Shame of it is, many are.

How do you do that exactly, I have several damaged microwaves with perfectly good internals we were keeping for parts. Magnetrons and the capacitors are a little dangerous to mess with unless you are careful. Is there a site that explains this. I think it would be come to have a Microwave gun!!

I vote with my pocketbook.  TigerDirect, et al took me for an $80 rebate about two and a half years ago.  I haven't bought a thing from them since.  I've also steered about a half dozen customers away from them in that time.  What's that old saying?  "Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me."
