Does anyone know of a resource of finding therapy that is familiar with the lifestyle?

Try http://www.ncsfreedom.org/kap/

Race Bannon kept a list of Kink Aware Professionals and I think he turned it over to those folks.

Good Luck

Depends on the issue, however, I know several (people who can point you), and I'd suspect they'll be in touch with you shortly, as needed, dependant upon your current need/interest.

Try the Bannon's Kink Aware Professionals listings

I got my therapist from there.  He's the most supportive therapist I've ever had that I didn't need to hide anything from.  Been seeing him for nearly 2 yrs now and he's helped me cope/negotiate around the nuances of the kink world.

Hi im afraid i dont know where to tell you to look as im in the uk.  Im currently training to be a counsellor hoping to specialise as a sex therapist .  I think there are a lot of people out there who need to speak to someone without being afraid of talkin about kinky stuff [:)]

[:@] Ive been looking for one in Australia for years, Im bipolar so its vital that I have someone other than my shrink who merely helps me balance my meds.

Fascinating idea.

I've been wondering about retraining in counselling and it hadn't even occurred to me that my kinkiness could add another string to my professional bow until I read this thread.

Now....if y'all can hang on for three years, I'll be happy to put you on my books [:)]

While it can be helpful to find someone who is also kinky or who bills him/herself as "kink aware" I don't think it is necessary.

A good therapist can help you regardless of her knowledge or her personal opinions because she realizes that her job is to help you become the best you can through primarily asking questions, validating your feelings when they are helpful, and suggesting new ways of looking at things.

I've been with the same therapist for many years now. She knew nothing about BDSM or poly. She is wonderful and we (the entire family) go to her about once a month just as a way to help us more objectively deal with any issues that arise. She has never told any of us that our dynamics are wrong and in fact has told us that we are really a very healthy family with a lot of love.

I recommend paying several therapist for one session, being honest with each, and feeling them out before you chose one. Listen closely, watch them closely, and remember that as a client you always have the right to not return if you feel your lifestyle is being attacked or belittled.
