Howdy folks. I just bought my pet her first collar, and admittedly it's the first collar I've ever given anybody. Therefore I need to know a little bit about it from anybody who has experience.

The collar itself is just a thin piece of leather with a single ring in the middle, and if possible both of us would like her to wear it 24/7. Is that a possibility or would the toll of daily life (showers etc.) ruin the collar? Obviously both of us would like to preserve it as long as possible, but if it's going to wear out then that's just part of life. It'd just be nice for it to last longer than a couple weeks.

try to avoid getting it wet and you should be fine wearing al the time might get uncomfortable butt make sure you take it off each day to clean it and her neck to keep her from breaking out under her collar

The type of leather, tanning methods, coloring(dye) used and finish applied all need to be considered before a stock answer can be given.

Can you provide more details, perhaps a link to a photo?

That's just a picture of the model they had on the site. It doesn't mention anything about what materials etc. went into producing it.

OK...A JT's Stockroom collar. (if you call they can probably tell you more details on the leather).

Looks like a white dyed vegtan or latigo. (It's fairly stiff, right?). It might be finished with a carnuba wax or a resin coating. Hardware is probably nickle coated steel which means the nickle will eventually (over time) rub off and the hardware will rust.

My suggestions:

Soaps, shampoos, lotions, natural body oils, and other fluids can damage leather. Wipe often with a barely damp cloth.
Remove collar once a week and wipe down thoroughly, using a cotton swab to get into the nooks and crannies under the D-ring and around the buckle.
Lightly condition the leather sporadically (once a month or so) with a quality leather conditioner (I suggest Fiebings Aussie Leather Conditioner).
