I'm wondering whether something I seem to have noticed, is noticed by anyone else?

It seems to me that as soon as we get to 200+ users on the fora here, the threads seem to deteriorate and the rate of posts seems to fall, rather than rise. Sub 200, everything goes well, meanwhile.

Or, as my psychologist maintains, am I far too removed from reality to have come to that conclusion with any objective judgement?

E

Based on experience as an admin of other forums.....

There is usually a "hardcore" of regular posters that quickly respond to threads that interest them, and they either stay on topic or at least follow an understandable migration of the the original topic. As the topics are of interest they already have intelligent comments and questions in mind for the next few posts on the topic and a good idea where the thread will go as they can often predict to an extent the responses that their posts will generate

Once active users rise there come in to play the irregular and newer posters who can without intention or realisation interrupt or divert a thread that sort of disturbs the flow and puts the "hardcore" off their stride.

Short answer - I suspect you could well have a better grip on reality than I do

The interesting part of this phenomenon is the dichotomy of new/old users.

The new posters have a push/pull effect on the veterans, who alternate between disgust and delight, while maintaing a counterbalance of disengenuity.  If this social episode were inverted, we would see a higher influx of lurkers, while decreasing the post rate.  However, this would increase posters, simply at lower volumes.

What is possible is to maintain volume at high rates, if our regulars positively reinforced the newer posters, in a co-active feed environment.  This would take active participation, though, of all high-rate posters.

Who's in?

Yours,

benji

Having not known the Element of Benji as a Random Equation for very long, the Thesis that Benji may in fact cause the Equilibrium to alter significantly to the Negative Quantity and therefore the Original Theorize Postulate is enhanced when Benji appears upon the scene, such as Halley's Comet causes more accidents because night watchers tend to pay less attention to their driving.

Therefore, for the sake of humanity it is wisest that the Element that is known as Benji be suspended from the ceiling during all constructive discourse and gagged with the nearest inflatable form of gag that can be found. We must also not forget that any form of clamps used will only help increase the positive flow of energy and therefore help to increase the discourse to a more mutual and beneficial aspect for all.

Well, even if Benji is having a Ron moment (on which, see my latest new thread to get things moving tonight "silly voices and impersonations") I'm more than pleased that I looked vaguely clever in the opinions expressed so far.

Actually, Ron's stuff usually makes sense.  Mine honestly and truly meant nothing.

I do like the idea of being gagged and clamped and hung from the ceiling, I'd just rather have LadyEllen do it than Robert.

Nothing personal.

Yours,

benji

Now, benji, I was just giving advice. I did not say I was the one going to be doing it..
Handing the clamps, ropes, and gags to E...

Looks like he is all yours.

Hey! You leave my pet alone- he's not harming anyone and he only wants to hang around a bit.
