OK - the impression we are fed in the UK, is that most Americans go to church every Sunday; but how true is this of US CM members?

I use to go to church every Sunday when I lived back home in Bridgeton but since I'm in a new area I don't go as much as I did...I need to get familiar with the area and I'll start going more often..You don't have to go to church to get into Heaven no matter what anyone tries to tell you~ I go because I find peace there...sometimes, I don't even listen to the service, I just write in my journal or pray...it's a place I feel close to talk to those loved ones who passed away..

I am thinking of joining an Episcopalian church, they seem fairly open-minded as far as mainstream religious folk... I have struggled with what I believe and don't believe for most of my life, and I know I don't want to attend any fire-and-brimstone-we're-better-than-you type of church....

i attend services on Saturdays with my daughters (since Sundays they are with the ex) and sometimes the early morn Sunday service - but not every week.

My beliefs about God and the nature of my spirituality would get me burned at the stake in most places where they wouldn't get me stoned (with rocks, not the good kind) or beheaded. When a family matter requires it, I will attend whatever service is held. When we have unmentionables, they will likely be raised as easy-going Lutherans until they are ready to start exploring for themselves.

I believe in God, I don't believe in organized religion. So, no, I haven't set foot in a church since I was 16 years old and my parents finally stopped forcing me.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate this is going to be a pretty self selecting poll (ie, only those interested in / involved in church and religion are likely to respond), but so far its interesting nonetheless. NB - I dont want this to turn into a religion bashing/promoting thread (we have plenty of those elsewhere!). I'm just interested in how much the impression we get is true, and perhaps examining the difference that makes, if true, between US and other English speaking societies. In the UK at least, its fairly unusual it seems, to find anyone who goes to church for anything more than baptisms, weddings and funerals, and reasonably difficult to find anyone who is Christian as more than a name of convenience (ie I must be Church of England, 'cause I'm nothin' else). I think saying "most" Americans go to church every Sunday is an exaggeration. I have no idea what the actual percentage is, but my guess would be below 1/2. A larger percentage goes, as you said, on religious holidays like Easter and Christmas. I myself do not go at all, but have had periods in my life when I did try to attend every Sunday. But, I never stuck with that for more than a couple years at a time. At this point in my life, I don't see myself ever joining a particular church or religion or ever attending services on a regular basis. After 40 years of exploration, I've decided that organized religion just doesn't do it for me.

don't forget Mother's Day - there's usually a packed house for services i do agree, people these do go to church for weddings, baptisms, funerals, special holidays - that's the only time i actually see my whole family under roof

No, although I used to go to synagogue every Saturday (I haven't for the last several months due to a falling-out with the board of directors).
