polyamorous -> Yahoo messenger without installing, etc. (1/10/2007 2:27:54 PM)

For everyone's info you can go to yahoo.com, and I know icq and believe msn and aim but not sure, and create a messenger account and email account, and use it without installing the messenger on your computer. On Yahoo you click on the messenger link where you would download the messenger and at the bottom of the page near the legal notices it says "Launch Web Messenger". If you do decide to install any messenger I recommend you do a custom install as they will try to install  a bunch of extra's and change things like your home page. I tweak debug, build and repair computers free for the poor. I can help anyone whom asks me online to make their computer better and safer either online or by phone.

I use trillian, seems to work better for me having one program that handles many different programs.

AIM has one: http://aimexpress.aim.com/

Trillian is great, I use it as well.

I can't say about Yahoo, though with Trillian there are lots of options to show/hide windows.

Go to http://www.meebo.com/   It is a webbased interface that works with all the major IM clients, and it will work anywhere, even at places like your office.

Gaim. Cross Platform. Open Source. Multi-Service. Keep your Google, Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, and Jabber accounts in one place.

From their Terms O Service ( Which they reserve the right to modify at any time without notice, your use constitutes acceptance )

"Meebo, Inc. reserves the right, but has no obligation, to monitor the materials posted in the public areas of the Web site."

Yeah, well isn't the WEB SERVER public? So ... ALL YOUR IM'S can be recorded by whoever meebo is?

Is that *desirable* to anyone?

"You are not required to provide personally identifiable information to visit this Web site; however, in order to access your third party message accounts you are required to enter your user name(s) and password(s)."

Is that not the stupidest fucking sentence ever written?

Uh, Meebo... Userid's and Passwords DEFINE personally identifiable information.

"Meebo, Inc. does not store your user name(s) or password(s) on our server."

Just a UID, so we can follow the records of your chats from day to day.

Wow. Who wrote that site? The fucking government spies? Nah.

It's easier to just tap AT&T's backbone, isn't it?

First, tell someone who gives a shit.  I have used it without incidence.

Secondly, if you have a problem with their TOS, DON'T FUCKING USE IT!!!  Why do you have to drag your bag of shit in here?  I can not believe you actually thought I would care.  Read My sig.

I think full disclosure of all security and privacy vulnerabilities is the "RIGHT" or "MORAL" thing to do. Maybe All Your Windows PC's Wouldn't Belong To Us if more professionals believed that way.

Make whatever choices you want. My privacy and confidentiality are important to me. Don't you use envelopes too? Why not just use postcards if you don't care about other people's snooping?

Wait, Didn't Bush just tack on a signing statement about that?

ym has my computer all messed up. i dotn use it or any any more.

polyamorous -> RE: Yahoo messenger without installing, etc. (1/11/2007 10:36:12 PM)

The purpose of my post was just to point out you can IM and get an email account without downloading anything on Yahoo and ICQ, as I said I am not sure about MSN and AIM, also to point out if you DO Install a messenger read the fine print and do a custom install, only install the messenger no other installs or changes allowed to your computer.  It was not meant to start arguments, and I hate spies be they government or commercial.

That's the real benefit of Open Source software, such as the multiplatform ( Windows, Mac, Linux, whatever ) and multi service ( AOL, Y!, MSN, etc... ) and since it's FREE AS IN SPEECH, you *GET THE SOURCE CODE TOO*.

Well, what are the chances someone will bother to hide Evil Software in software which is publicly maintained and examined?

Zero.

One of the other maintainers would certainly say, "WTF is this shit?", and it wouldn't be committed to the version control system.

If windows was open source, well, it would be Linux, but you would have a much better experience. We already have "Stateless" computing, where the ENTIRE SYSTEM is burned to a cd, and runs off of it, without a harddrive. No Spyware can change that CD, and if something goes wrong, just shut the PC down, reboot, and reload the CLEAN VERSION.

But I digress. If you're worried about shit infecting the software you use, make the choice to investigate and select OPEN SOURCE solutions, and you'll avoid a lot of the bullshit associated with windows.

all4yourplsr -> RE: Yahoo messenger without installing, etc. (1/12/2007 7:08:43 AM)

I used AIM almost exclusively until they pulled their chat rooms.  Now, I use Yahoo messenger almost exclusively and, if I need a chat fix, I go to irc.

pahunkboy -> RE: Yahoo messenger without installing, etc. (1/12/2007 7:11:57 AM)

As  FAR BACK AS   AOL 2.1,  the isp had it in the program that aol was the only isp. no other would function. when i seen that it left a bad taste in my mouth,

polyamorous -> RE: Yahoo messenger without installing, etc. (1/12/2007 8:12:34 AM)

OK FOR THOSE who downloaded and installed yahoo try adjusting preferences to not start with windows. This applies to all messengers. Also if you install any messenger do a custom installation not a full or automatic installation, read the fine print, only install the messenger nothing else and allow no other changes to your computer. If any messenger will not stop opening go to  start, run, type in "msconfig" and ok or hit enter, go to startups and uncheck any offending program starting with windows. Also do a search before rebooting for startup folders and files and see that the offending program is not also there or it will automatically on restart recheck itself in msconfig startups.

Good point made here.  Yahoo is the WORST offender for installing a whole bunch of unnecessary shit when you install it.  I hate Yahoo with a passion and will not install it on any machine.  Thankfully you can add Yahoo contacts into the new MSN.

polyamorous -> RE: Yahoo messenger without installing, etc. (1/14/2007 3:26:29 AM)

If yahoo is acting up, uninstall it, do a search for every folder and file with yahoo in it's name and remove it, then go to majorgeeks and get regcleaner. On first page check anything says yahoo and any other program you know is no longer in your computer and at the lower right corner click remove selected. Click on options, registry cleanup, set method to automatic and ole cleaner to extra powerful, oh and to make life easer on tools uninstall menu,  check show all programs. Then click on tools registry cleanup, do them all. Download it at.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

After doing that and reinstalling yahoo doing a custom install and making sure to uncheck start with windows and log on and whenever there is an internet connection I have had no real problems with it unless 10 or more people try to talk to me at once, then my resources drop and my computer freezes, solution, I limit how many people I talk to at once and have my recourses showing near my clack, if they get low I reboot, best idea, get an apple.mac.
