ORIGINAL: polyamorous The purpose of my post was just to point out you can IM and get an email account without downloading anything on Yahoo and ICQ, as I said I am not sure about MSN and AIM, also to point out if you DO Install a messenger read the fine print and do a custom install, only install the messenger no other installs or changes allowed to your computer. It was not meant to start arguments, and I hate spies be they government or commercial. That's the real benefit of Open Source software, such as the multiplatform ( Windows, Mac, Linux, whatever ) and multi service ( AOL, Y!, MSN, etc... ) and since it's FREE AS IN SPEECH, you *GET THE SOURCE CODE TOO*. Well, what are the chances someone will bother to hide Evil Software in software which is publicly maintained and examined? Zero. One of the other maintainers would certainly say, "WTF is this shit?", and it wouldn't be committed to the version control system. If windows was open source, well, it would be Linux, but you would have a much better experience. We already have "Stateless" computing, where the ENTIRE SYSTEM is burned to a cd, and runs off of it, without a harddrive. No Spyware can change that CD, and if something goes wrong, just shut the PC down, reboot, and reload the CLEAN VERSION. But I digress. If you're worried about shit infecting the software you use, make the choice to investigate and select OPEN SOURCE solutions, and you'll avoid a lot of the bullshit associated with windows.
