MaryT -> Questions on Leather Toys (1/11/2007 6:17:34 AM)

I just received some leather implements.  They are beautiful but were very rigid at first.  The set came with a towlette "leather conditioner" which softened them up some.  It was only one towelette and it's gone now, but I would like to keep conditioning them, unless there is a good reason not to do that.  Can anyone recommend a good conditioner for leather toys?  Can conditioning be overdone?

Also, most of it is finished leather, smooth and glossy, but I wasn't sure if the conditioner should be used on the unfinished leather parts, like the lashes on a martinet.  Any advice on that?

And a third question:  Does anyone have any experience with a leather Loopy J?  I've heard the rubber version is hell on a handle and am wondering if a leather one would be somewhat less intense.

Thanks in advance.

MaryT

Mary,

I've sent your post to a friend who is a boot black and a leather care expert. she's on here and hopefully she will respond.

You can buy leather wipes in the car care section of stores (Walmart, Target, etc).  They're for leather seats but work great for light cleaning and conditioning of leather toys, coats, etc.

For deeper conditioning, I use Pecard's Leather Dressing.  Depending on where you live (dry area = more often; more humid = less often), you shouldn't have to deep condition more than once or twice a year.

In general, new leather toys are stiff, but to soften them up, conditioning is not the answer - using them is.

With the number of types of leather out there telling you what to use sight unseen is folly at best. Your toy could be any of 4 or 5 different types/methods of tanning, each with it's own proper method of care.
Oiltan needs different care than soft chrome tan which requires a different care than stiff chrome tan, which requires a different care than veg tan.
Leather conditioner can be over used, when it happens the leather will actually break down faster.
Over conditioning will attract more dirt to the leather.

The martinet is likely a latigo/ oiltan (the pics I've seen of them seem to be what we here in the US call Shoelace floggers madde from latigo shoelaces)

I'm sure Elegant my slave, and most likely the bootblack Fire mentions above will have some more comments and able to give you even more information.

TOPGRAIN FLOGGERS
Floggers made with topgrain leather are fairly easy to identify. Topgrain leather is the uppermost layer of an animal’s skin. One side is fairly smooth and the other side has a suede like quality.

Cleaning
Keep all toys clean and in good condition. Wipe topgrain floggers with a soft, barely damp cloth after each use. Handle and tails can be cleaned a few times a year with a quality saddle soap used sparingly. A quality leather conditioner (such as Feibings Aussie Leather Conditioner) should be used sparingly as needed. When conditioning the tails only apply conditioner sparingly on the smooth, top grain side, not the suede like side.Too much conditioning can be detrimental to the leather. A few times a year is most often recommended unless you live in an extremely dry climate or store your  leather toys improperly.

Dr. Charles Moser, a nation’s leading authorities on sexuality-related medicine recommends hanging up floggers in a ventilated place for a week after use. HIV and Hep C viruses, cannot live outside the body in the air.

Storage and Ongoing Care
Leather is porous and needs to breathe. Floggers are best stored hanging. Use a cotton covering if possible (pillowcase or specially made flogger storage bag). You should store your leather in an airy, dry area that is not too hot or cold and certainly not damp. Do not store in direct contact with the flow of heating vents or near heating units and avoid direct sunlight as this will dry and fade leather. Avoid storing any leather items in plastic bags, plastic containers, tight drawers, car trunks, bathrooms or packed jumbled into a toybag or toybox. It is normal for flogger tails to stretch a bit and become uneven with use. Trim the stretched tails with sharp scissors.

SUEDE FLOGGERS
Suede really isn't very cleanable. It is too porous and generally you end up having to rub and scrape off the soiled surface of a suede to clean or remove stains (Almost like sanding it off a piece of wood). I tend to advise against suede because of this. The thing many people don't realize is that suede will last only about 1/4 as long as a topgrain leather toy of the same type. So in the long run buying a topgrain flogger is more economical, even if the initial cost is twice that of a suede one.

Cleaning
Keep leather toys item clean and in good condition. Let your suede flogger air dry after use, as moisture cannot be removed with a cloth.  A special suede brush or suede stone will bring back the nap of the suede and might remove some dirt. Do not use cleaners, conditioners or scotch guard on suede.

Thanks everyone.  I learned a lot and am really glad I asked.

This is my stuff.  Some of it (like leather paddles) are double-layered and smooth on both sides.

Eight inches of annual precipitation and 300 days of sunshine equals extremely dry, I think.  I'll error on the side of  caution and use minimal conditioning.

So much for my cute treasure chest. [:(]

I guess I could hang stuff in the back of a closet.  Having it out in the open might frighten my sweet ol' landlady.

Thanks, Elegant, and everyone who responded.

Get a tension shower rod and thread the top end of a sheet thru the rod. Hang it in the back of your closet and hide the toys behind it.

how does one care for leather gags?

Wow, must be the season for buying leather goodies! I just received today a flogger and a cat-o-nine tail, but there was no care instruction posted.  Thank you for posting this thread, and for all the others who are providing their knowledge to help make my purchases last.

I have had great results using Bick's conditioner on my leather toys and clothing.

Namely Bick -4 Leather conditioner

For singletail whips I use Peter Jack's beeswax compund

How about "mink oil" and "neats foot oil"... my old standards for boots and leather jackets?
What do the experts think?

Mink oil can soften leather, sometimes more than a person wants for that item.  Otherwise I used it on my boots all the time while in the military.  It's a good waterproofer if applied heavily enough.

Neats foot oil on the other hand...  Neats are on the verge of extinction and while the oil collected from their little chopped off feet
(it takes the feet of over a dozen neats to make one 8 oz bottle of oil) is a good leather conditioner is it really worth the thousands of neats left to scamper about on their little stumps?

Neats foot oil is really good for softening leather however I'm not sure how it is as a protectant.  I was always told to apply a coat of mink oil after rubbing in neats foot oil.

QandA -> RE: Questions on Leather Toys (9/24/2008 2:52:11 PM)

Is there any reason that mink oil won't work for leather cuffs?  My Sir just got a pair for me and I love them.  I want to be able to wear them all the time, but Sir has some concerns about my sweat and body oils damaging the leather.

How often should leather items that are worn daily be cleaned?

The only leather I've ever worked with is saddle leather and I don't want to mess up my pretty leather cuffs by going at them with Murphy's Oil Soap if that's not the right stuff to use.

Thanks!!

lil Aidan
